I am wondering if burning at a slower speed enhances quality or just reduces the chance of an error whilst burning.ie if the disc burns ok at 4x without reporting any errors would there be any benefit from burning at say 2x

There is some mixed opinion about this, but if it burns properly at the rated speed (4X), I see nothing gained by reducing the speed. If you are getting bad burns at the rated speed, slowing down the burn rate is just a bandaid, and not really addressing the problem, but if it works, fine.
