  1. Hey folks-

HELP! This has been bugging me all night!

I'm setting up a pc specifically for a media center, and I've got a problem where certain avi files (both DivX and XVID) are glitchy (kinda interlaced looking) in the left quarter of the screen. At first, I was going crazy as it seemed totally random, but I've finally determined that it has to do with the video dimensions: anything with a dimension over 400 wide is glitchy, and anything under is fine. To test this out, I created two XVIDs from the same source, one at 416x304 and one at 384x288; the latter was fine, while the former was not.

To add to the confusion, I am having this issue in both Media Player Classic 6.4.8.2 (my player of choice) and PowerDVD 5, but NOT in BSPlayer or WMP8. However, I'd rather fix this issue than settle for sub-par players...

The new PC is clean, with not much more than the programs listed above, as well as DVD Region Free and ATI Remote Wonder (I already uninstalled the MMC software, in case that was it - it wasn't). For codecs, I've got the newest GKnot pack (which I have uninstalled/reinstalled, also to no effect). All the files in question work fine on my old PC, of course (using the same programs/codec pack).

    Can anyone please help?

Update your xvid codec and Divx 5, or alternatively install FFDSHOW which decodes both.

  3. Like I said, I've already installed the newest Gordian Knot Codec pack, which includes XVID, DivX and FFDShow...

  4. What did you use to make the encodes/do the resizing? (avisynth, vdub, etc.)

  5. I used Gordian Knot, which uses DVD2AVI and VirtualDubMod. Like I said, the files play perfect on my normal pc, but the larger one does not on the new pc.

Update: I just finished completely reformatting/reinstalling Windows, then I installed only the GKnot Codec pack and Media Player 6.4. I still have the problem, so I'm guessing that it must be the video card? It's an Asus Pundit mini-PC, with onboard video, which must just be sub-par...

  6. So no one has any ideas on this... ?

  7. OK, so you can get the 416x304 to play just fine on the Asus when you use BSplayer, but not media player classic? That would lead me to believe that your computer can do it. Doesn't MPC use its own codecs to playback video?

Like I said, I've already installed the newest Gordian Knot Codec pack, which includes XVID, DivX and FFDShow...
Just because the codecs are installed doesn't mean that they will be the one that plays the video stream. For testing purposes I would make sure ffdshow is playing the stream (first disable the "play generic MPEG4 streams option in the divx decoder configure window. Then enable the Libavcodec option for Xvid and divx in ffdshow.)

Also, have you tried playing it with zoomplayer? If not you might want to give that a try.

  8. I just checked, and the libavcodec is already selected in the ffdshow properties. However, I couldn't find where to disable "play generic mpeg4 streams" in the DivX codec config (in fact, there were very few things to change at all!).

  9. Here is a pic of the Divx decoder options page. Make sure the "Support Generic Mpeg-4" is unchecked.

Haven't used Divx in a while so it may not be there anymore??

Anyway, if you try zoomplayer, while the movie is playing zoomplayer can tell you which codecs it is using, so you can verify you are using ffDshow from there.
