  1. Hi; I am capturing VHS, editing and burning VCD-s with good success.
Capturing DV from camcorder and editing with Ulead VideoStudio 5 works fine, but when I use Ulead DVD Plug-in to burn SVCD-s I get a CD which will play well in my standalone DVD player (Pioneer 434) but the pix is wobbly. It is difficult to describe, but when the pix pans lines are vibrating, both the horizontal as well as the vertical. There is less but still some of the effect when the pix is stationary. After spending some time on forums I would say that they use the word "jerky"?

I tried different constant bitrates. I had to create my own template in VS5 but it allows only up to 2400 constant or variable bitrates. There is no difference in quality between the factory preset 1123 and the max allowed 2400.

I would even send a SVCD disc I created (1 min SVCD clip) to someone who could identify and correct my problem.

Some references are made to mux, demux and remux to correct jerkyness. What are those and how to? And VS5 uses Ligos LSX compressor I had to incorporate in my new template. Is it an older version and can it cause the jerkyness? How to circumwent it?

  2. Is the SVCD you make interlaced and from an interlaced source?

If so, you probably have the field order wrong with the encoder. I don't know the program Ulead, but with TMPGenc you can change the field order of the source (topfield first (A) or bottom field first )B). The problem you describe sounds like a wrong field order with interlaced SVCD's.

  3. Thanks, I checked the clip.
The clip to be compressed is in NTSC DV 720x480 (29.97 fps) Field order A format.
I used a compressor format of SVCD in Frame based format. Ooops. Ulead VideoStudio 5 does not have a SVCD template but one can make his own (under custom New) and I made my templates with Frame Based format.
I will make a new template with Field order A and try a new clip ASAP. Let you know.

  4. Hi Peter; As I promised I tried the compression with field order A. But then I observed that the captured clip in the PC already developed some jerkyness and the compression just exaggerated it, so I must find the root of the problem. The original recording in the camcorder JVC GR DVL 815U is smooth as replayed from the camcoder to the TV.
Captured with VideoStudio 5 into Microsoft AVI file Open DML and played on the monitor has some of the jerkyness. This becomes worse when compressed to SVCD MPEG2 and have not seen much if any difference if the compression is done Frame based of Field order A. I didn't even burn a new disc I can see the problem quite well on the monitor playing back in VideoStudio 5.
Since being new to this, what are the specs of Microsoft AVI (this is the format VS5 uses to capture from digital camcorder) and what Open DML means.
