I would like to create a VCD that will play in most standard DVD players but also contains a PC readable file.
I need to send out a sales and training video and I don't have control over which playback device the end user will have to view the VCD. I would like the VCD to be as compatible as possible to most set top DVD players.
At the same time I would like to have a file included that Windows Media Player will read. This doesn't have to be an auto play file. I believe a path and file name will work for our end users.
Two different disks (one VCD and one data) would be the least attractive solution.
Multisession sounds like the wrong approach. Does a authoring tool exist that will include the original source file along with the VCD info? Nero 6 allows the original jpg (still images) to be included with a slide show. Can that be done with an mpeg?

DVDLab is ideal for this type of thing.
Author the dvd as normal, and in the compilation screen, it allows for including any other type of file on the disk, even raw data.
Edit: Huge mistake on my part. You're authoring SVCD, not DVD. My apologies.Cheers, Jim

Just about any VCD authoring software should allow you to do this, but there's really no need. The dat file on a VCD should play just as well on a pc as a raw mpg file. One very good solution, IMO, is to just include media player classic on the disk and if you are paranoid about someone having some kind of codec conflict (you'd really have to have one to not be able to play an mpeg1 .dat file) then include an mpeg decoder on the disk as well. The Elucard mpeg1/2 decoder is free with a trial. You can easily make media player classic autoplay it or you could include a link to start the session on the disk.
A disk such as this will literally play on any pc running windows and any hardware player that supports both VCD and your chosen media (cdr brand etc..)
