  1. I have a couple of video files that I downloaded, that won't play properly.

The video is actually about 5 minutes long, but when I open the player says it's only 53 seconds, and it will only play 53 seconds, then stop. I can manually search ahead, so I know the video and sound are there, but even when I skip ahead, say two minutes into the file, the player still thinks it's only 53 seconds long, and plays for the remainder of the 53 seconds, then stops.

I have tried WMP9 and Media Player Classic. These files are all mpeg 1, don't know who encoded them.

    Any ideas?

The mpegs probably have non-standard specs. Use a software DVD player like Power DVD or WinDVD instead.

  3. it plays fine in power dvd, but when I reinstalled WinXP and all my software, these files played just fine in every program for a while. Then one day they started acting like this again. I was wondering if it had something to do with the codec, like maybe I accidentally installed a different one or something.

That's more than likely what happened. Check your mpeg decoders in DxMan. You can remove whichever one(s) you want. Do this at your oiwn risk.
