problems with a codec

hi people not sure if im on the right section here...got a few problems, so let me explain in detail....ive got some avi movie files that im gonna hopefully make into either vcd or dvd format....the problem is i cant play them on my pc or get any of my software and converting software to read them...i believe they are a format called divxmpg4 v3......when i tried to open them in my free divx player 2.5(should i upgrade my divx player) it said unknown format or something, and when i tried to get tmpgenc 2.520 to read it said something like unknown file format.(should i update my tmpgenc software)...so basically im looking for someone to try and explain what motions i should go through...would i have to convert them from the current format to another codec, or are my peices of software outdated, and maybe thats why i cant read the files...any help would be much appreciated as its driving me crazy......by the way i have successfully burnt many vcds and dvds before with other avi files etc so its not that i dont what im doing its just i dont understand all this codec stuff......ive been told by other people that these avi files work perfectly on there systems.....
