Wouldnt a standalone player that supports XviD/DiVX with AC3 audio be able to play a SVCD movie with AC3 aswell?

No definitely not. It doesn't matter that the hardware supports the individual formats (after all, all svcd compliant DVD players support both SVCD as well as AC3, just not together.) Unless the manufacturers specifically programmed the firmware, as well as modified the hardware, to support AC3 in SVCDs, then you won't have that functionality.
I don't believe I have ever heard of any hardware player that supports AC3 in a SVCD, even out of the new batch of players that support xvid and the like. Now if your player plays raw mpeg files than maybe it will work, but its still doubtful. You can always make a short sample disk, but don't hold your breath. -
Well yes my Norcent DP-300 does play raw mpeg files so ill give it a shot. Ill keep ya posted if anyone is interested
