  1. Hey folks,
I just ripped "School of Rock" and was fooling around and was able to get the Apple DVD player in Panther to play the Video_TS folder right from my external FW drive. Holy Moley! That's cool! I did not know that was possible. Can someone explain this?

The explanation is: Apple DVD Player can play VIDEO-TS folders ... largely because one of the output formats of Apple DVD Studio Pro is .. guess what? a VIDEO_TS folder.

Yeah, it's always been in X. It's even in OS9, all you have to do is enable it in the DVD Player 2.7's prefs. What I like is the ability to play a DVD folder over AirPort Extreme. My Ti doesn't have any problems playing DVD content from my Dual. Regular AirPort doesn't work very well, it's too slow, I see transfer speeds between 500KB/s and 1.2MB/s using Extreme. Now what's the speed of broadband again? Maybe some day soon.......

Mplayer doesn't do VIDEO_TS. VLC does, but not as well. The big difference is that DVD Player plays only DVDs, Mplayer and VLC and such play pretty much everything, from XD50 encoded AVIs with Ogg Vorbis audio to MKV files.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

VLC is progressing nicely as an alternative DVD player. Especially with the new version just released not to long ago

  8. Yes, I have been using vlc on my Wallstreet for some time now, and just downloaded the new version for my TiBook, but what started this whole topic was that I was having trouble with vlc dropping frames, so I tried Apples DVD player and (to quote Jacques on Finding Nemo, "Voila. He is clean. )
I like vlc, especially to quickly check any edited footage, such as with ffmpegX or quicktime stuff.
Thanks for your help guys! It's amazing the stuff one can learn by just sitting back and lurking. 8)

  10. Now that we've had this nice discussion regarding how great Apple's DVD player works with Video_TS folders, I can't seem to get it to work with some other movies that I've ripped....it says "DVD Player encountered a system error: could not detect valid media file {-70001}"
WTF?? The Video_TS folder is the same as the others, and plays fine with VLC. Am I missing something?

The DVD Player app that came in the 10.3.3 update has issues!

I don't know exactly what the 70001 error means, but from some brief research it shows up when DVD Player can't read the VIDEO_TS folder whether on a disc or the hard drive. My guess there is something about the ripped VIDEO_TS folders you have that DVD Player doesn't like.

  15. Hmmmm. Used MTR 1.5.4 to rip all Video_TS folders, using Main Title Feature. Very odd. Interesting that VLC plays and Apple DVD does not.

It probably is something similar related to the fact that my Advanced tutorial disks dont play in apple dvd player, but they play with NO problems in VLC and standalone dvd players

guess is that the main feature function of mac the ripper is just pulling the movie, and not other things but you still have the "dvd" structure for those missing files, so dvd player freaks.

thats the case with my advanced method. Who cares... it works in VLC and in your standalone right?!

I havent used MTR since it first came out but didn't the main feature option only decrypt the VOBs associated with the main feature but not rewrite the .ifo and .bup files? Also, if it only rewrites the .ifo file and not the .bup file I think that would make Apple DVD Player choke as the ifo and its backup (.bup) must agree.

Antny I believe you hit the nail on the head, although I wonder why it played the "School of Rock" Video_TS folder? Ah well, back to ripping with entire disk checked! Now if only I can locate all those DVD's again!
Galactica, yes it does play in VLC and stand alone. It's the whole principle of the thing..ya know?

No, MTR in Main Feature mode backs up the entire title set, and creates IFO files for it using tocgen. Make sure you're using the latest version. Also, see if complete disc mode output behaves differently with DVD Player. You could always try repairing the permissions on the drive you're trying to play from, as that sometimes fixes certain problems.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."
