  1. I have a couple AVI files (XviD and AC3 audio) that I ripped from the same DVD in a batch; I'm now on my laptop and am having some problems playing those movies. After installing the codecs and checking GSpot (which confirms I have the right codecs installed), I still had to run ffdshow to cancel out some serious skipping.

My problem now, though, is that anytime I load the movies, the program (whether it is WinDVD, WMP9 or DivX Player) crashes after 2-5 seconds...

  2. I would suggest that you try another XviD distribution or an updated version of the one you have. Either it is corrupt or buggy.

I've been using Koepi's distro - http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1043648426 and have had good luck

  3. Thanks for the suggestion-- re-installed Koepi's distro (which I already had installed) and ran the movie through the FourCC changer. Same effect: the movie played for about 5 seconds and then slowed down quite considerably before crashing.

  4. Have you tried changing the decoder in ffdshow to "libavcodec", "XviD", and "disabled"; all three? Is your version of Koepi's distro the latest one, as in the link I posted?

Do you have any other XviD movies you can try to see if they do the same thing?

Perhaps it's not the video that's crashing it, but the AC3 audio. Try an XviD movie without AC3 sound and see if it does the same thing. Are you using AC3Filter?

  5. As I said (above) i re-installed the XviD codec, but I didn't try any of the settings with ffdshow-- actually, now that i look at the Configuation app, I don't see offhand where to make those changes, can you guide me a bit?

Unfortunately, I don't have any additional movies at all (let alone XviD) on this system, but I'll try the AC3 Filter.

    Edit
Found the setting (for anyone reading: open the ffdshow Configuation screen and go to the Codecs item from the list on the left. select the XviD codec and [in the middle column], click on the cell and choose "XviD" from the drop-down) and fixed it. Thanks for the tip.
