Hi all,

Is it possible to calculate the exact space that will be taken up by a set of files on a CD or DVD including all the overhead (lead in/out, TOC)?

I want to add parity files to my disk and am trying to calculate exactly how much I can add for a given set of files. I can do this roughly but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen an exact formula. It seems that there is probably a relationship to the number of files but I wonder if the number of characters in the file and/or directory names is a factor too.

I'm not really talking about video formats. This is more for data formats.

Assuming that you're using QuickPar... the rough method is best. Set it up to create 30 evenly-sized PAR2 files, where the total space is a bit more then the estimated space left in the DVD project. Then, add the PAR2 files to the DVD project, dropping any PAR2 files that don't fit. With practice, you'll end up dropping only 1 or 2 PAR2 files, and QuickPar doesn't care.

QuickPar v0.8 is better at reporting the size of the resulting parity files then previous versions.

Also, not all media is identically sized, so you should always plan on leaving 10-40Mb free on a DVD disc.
