  1. So ive been trying to make some vcds recently, ive been using nero 6, i use vision express to convert from avi to mpeg, then i use it to burn them as well, ive tried it without converting first as well,

now, on the discs, i have 3 episodes, and usually towards the middle of the 2nd episode, little discolored blocks pop up for a second, then go away, and the audio makes a cracklying noise, and the 3rd episode is almost full of them, and hard to watch.

this doesnt happen on every disc, but probably half of the ones i have burn i have had to redo once or twice to get a good burn, i tried a different disc, and thought that it was working better, because 2 discs in a row came out perfect, but the 3rd one did not.

anybody have any ideas on what could be causing this?

  2. My first suggestion would be to stop using Nero for (S)VCD, especially for encoding. Nero's encoder sucks royally for encoding (strongly recommend TMPGEnc), and it has a severe limitation for burning in that it can't make use of chapters. Try VCDEasy for burning (or at least for creating an SVCD-complaint bin/cue that can be burned correctly with programs like CDRWin).

As far as the blotches you are seeing, it is probably one or more of three things:

    1) Bad source files. If the MPEGs you're using have encoding errors, so will the (S)VCDs.

    2) Burning at too high of a speed. I'd bet that this is the main culprit. Let 'er rip at close to max speed for data, but I never burn (S)VCDs at anthing faster than 4X on my 52X burner, and nerver higher than 2X on my old 8X burner for the very reason you are citing. Some people have had good luck burning at higher speeds, but how many disk do you have to ruin before you trade a little burn time for better quality?

    3) Bad Media. Unless you're handling disks with your fingers while eating messy food this probably isn't a major issue, but always good to make sure you have a clean, unblemished disk before you start.

  3. I've gotten those on my VHS to DVD conversions via TMpgEncPlus. I believe that is a form of copy protection??? I Converted a whole series of tapes, and they were all good quality, but every once in a while I'd get a conversion with those blocks. Those with blocks had constant dropout (like once a minute or 30 seconds) Burned at 1 & 2x so It definately isn't due to tooo fast burning, and it wasn't bad media either...

It is either in the capturing or encoding...

Did you specify your source material (VHS tapes???) and what HW device you are using for capture.

  4. ive just been downloading avi files, i was using winmpg video convert to convert to mpg beforehand, but i did a reformat on my hard drive last week and it wouldnt work right afterwards, so i tried the export option in nero vision express 2, and i liked it alot, because the quality was so much better

i have been burning at max speed, so hopefully this is my problem..

i dont think it is the data, because every once in a while it works perfect.. and i do a fresh convert from avi to mpg before i start
