  1. "XXL blanks: Disc4You presents the mammoth CD blanks!

It almost seems like just the other day we succeeded in crossing the 80 minute capacity limit for blanks - a feat once thought of as being impossible. And yet the result was a then astonishing 99 minute CD-R media. This time however we have truly outdone ourselves, though it meant going far beyond borders we too thought could not be crossed, borders countless press experts believed to be inviolable.

Our newly designed and developed XXL blanks offer a storage capacity of (please be sure you are seated before reading this): 120 minutes!

Just in time for the CeBIT 2001, we are proud to introduce the result of intensive research and extensive compatibility tests with almost all current drives: The Disc4You-XXL-CD-R. The new media offers 120 minutes of storage capacity, and can therefore hold up to 22 hours of music in MP3 format or a complete movie in MPEG-1 format - the ultimate alternative to storing movies on your hard drive.

Other new presentations for the CeBIT include CDRWIN 4 from Goldenhawk and DiscJuggler 3.5 from Padus. The new version of CDRWIN supports simultaneous recording with more than one recorder - a feature competitors can only offer at considerably higher prices.

As a result, DiscJuggler from Padus is being developed to become an extensive mastering application instead of a sole copying tool. Version 3.5 will offer support for external MP3 players and CD label design, in addition to pre-mastering of video and Super Video CDs.

You will find us at the CeBIT in hall 12, stand A 11."

This is an Article fom Disk-4-YOU. Does anyone formiliar with these CD-Rs? Anyone tryed them?

These CDR-120 have been announced a few times. But funnily enough you can't get them anywhere or get more indepth info's. I think possibly due to the fact that the +90CD-R's were causing enough problems for CD-Writers, it wouldn't surprise me if the company who actually produced these 120min CD-R's actually retracted them, before getting sued.

These days manufactorers unfortunately promise things on the CEBIT that are more in the development and testing stage, than are actually available...something to do with image perhaps???

The 120 minute CD-R is dead as of 17-10-01. According to somebody from disc4you, the company trying to peddle these XXL blanks, Phillips requested that all production be stopped lest the manufacturers lose their production licenses; this strong statement suggests that Phillips (the co-inventor of the CD) is either trying to draw the line on overshooting Red Book specifications, or is just being greedy. The main reason why 120 minute blanks never hit the market is due to the fact that new firmware is needed (according to disc4you) to utilize the entire capacity of the disc. Being that no company had written that firmware to date, no discs are available and would not work anyhow. Guess we'll have to wait for cheap DVD-R before we can use a higher-capacity disc other than the 90/99 minute CD-R. Such a shame--I was looking forward to seeing if these discs would enable me to put an entire mpeg-1 movie on a single disc without lowering the bitrate.
