Can I create a VCD using a DVD media?
I want to put an entire season (or 2) on 1 dvd.

From what I've read in another thread, it doesn't seem to be possible, unfortunately. To record onto a DVD-R, you need DVD-R software, which requires DVD authoring. When DVD-RW drives, supplant CDRW-drives in a few years, maybe the new Nero version, will provide a workaround, but for now, you're outta luck.
Besides, any mpg that you burn to a DVD-r is a DVD anyway!

So, Can I burn a DVD using VCD (MPEG1) quality to cram tons of video on the disk?
-
Yes Haferka, you can.
You would need obviously a DVD writer and some decent DVD authoring software though.
Both SpruceUP and DVD Virtuoso (also from Spruce) will accept a standard VCD complient MPEG-1 video file and create a DVD with it. Spruce up will accept a multiplexed MPEG-1 file and will convert the audio to DVD complient 48Khz when burning the disc. DVD Viruoso is the more professional package and needs seperate audio and video files. The audio also needs to be 48Khz before it will import.
This way you can squeeze 2 or 3 movies onto one DVD-R and still have acceptable quality. Of course, the movies will be VCD quality and not full DVD quality but they still look pretty good on my setup.
I have several DVD-R discs containing old VHS movies I have transferred and they all look great. I use a WINTV PVR card for the initial encoding and (after some dodgy drivers initially) the encoded video looks superb with the latest drivers installed.
If the movies are rare and I want good quality I encode as an MPEG-2 DVD compliant file but if the movies aren't as important then I just encode at VCD settings and use the resultant MPEG-1 fles. -
You can get a little more than seven hours on a dvd-r at standard vcd bitrates.

Hey Alkie,
I had posed a similar question a few months back. At that time, I was told that My DVD or DVDit would also work. However, I have not been tried this as of yet. I did know of the audio change to 48khz. Would you happen to know if a DVD-R authored with 2-3 VCD quality mpgs (VCDs) would work on a standalone player such as Pioneer or Apex? Thanks.

The answer is NO. You cannot make VCDs using DVD recordable media.
However, you can make DVDs using recordable DVD media. Importantly, you can use (sort of) VCD compatible files as the source files to create a DVD. Although the video component is okay, you will have to resample the audio to 48 kHz though.

Spruce UP will accept a standard VCD compatible MPEG1 file. It will resample the audio to 48Khz for you.
OK, misunderstood Haferka. I think he was probably asking if he could use VCD files on a DVD which of course, you can.
What you create will be a DVD though, it wont play in video CD players or standard CD rom drives but it will play on most DVD players.
It will be a DVD but with VCD quality video. This will allow you to store several movies on one disc but of course you wont get full DVD quality. I do this already as I have said before. -
Daywalker.
I have two Pioneer players, the 606D and a new 737. Both happily play all DVD-R and DVD-RW discs I have so far created. I would expect them to though seeing as Pioneer invented the DVD-R/RW format.
A friend of mine has an Apex player and they work fine on his although I'm not sure of his model number.
Even though you are using VCD quality files the resultant disc will be a DVD and will work on any player that can play DVD-R/RW. It even works on one of my friends Sony players which wont play normal VCDs. The reason is, as I said, that you are producing a DVD not a VCD. -
alkieman, would you mind testing something for me ? can you try using my SxVCD format, which is basicly VideoCD encoded with MPEG2 VBR instead of MPEG1 CBR, and see if that is accepted by the Spruce UP ? my guess is that it should, since it will be more "DVD" like, since both SxVCD and DVD use the same compression, with the only diffrence that resolution will be lower (VCD like), and might provide even more movie time on the DVD-R/RW media.
If you don't have the time for it, I understand, it's just curiasity on my part.

I think there would be problems inherent in the VCD to DVD conversion, since the 720x480 on a DVD is stretched to 853...
-
What do you mean exactly Hateslife??
As far as I can see, I don't believe that there is any inherent problem using VCD standard MPEG-1 on a DVD.

I tried loading an MPEG1 VCD file (either using Import or Add Media) in SpruceUp, after it scanned the file, the media list is empty : (
I tried demuxing the mpeg1 to m1v/mp2 but SpruceUp doesn't recognise the mp2...
alkieman, can you give a little info on the mpeg1's that SpruceUp would import?
Thanks -
Sefy.
I'll give it a go, not sure what will happen but Spruce Up is supposed to an MPEG2 at 352x240 or 352x288. So I would expect your SxVCD template to be fine. I'll try it over the weekend and report back.
REiREi.
Change the file extension from MP2 file to MPA and Spruce Up will accept it fine. They're both still standard Mpeg Layer II audio files, just the file extensions are different. -
Oops.. sorry guys, I was getting my applications mixed up. Spruce UP will NOT accept a 44khz MPEG audio file, only 48 khz. It's MyDVD that will resample the audio file to 48khz (at least the version that comes with European Pioneer A03 drives will, but then this version also supports chapters which the standard version does not).
My apologies, I forgot that I manually set my WinTV PVR card to capture audio at 48Khz even with MPEG1 files so that I don't have problems importing.
It's not a major problem as you can change the audio sampling rate of an audio file in TMPGEnc. Just select Audio Only as the output stream type and click on Configure. Set the sampling frequency to 48Khz and there you go.
Here's the complete list of audio/video assets that Spruce Up and DVD Virtuoso accept:
MPEG VIDEO BITRATES:
MPEG1 Video up to 1.856mbps
MPEG2 Video up to 9.8mbps
MPEG VIDEO RESOLUTIONS:
MPEG1 - SIF format only - 352x240 NTSC or 352x288 PAL
MPEG2 - Full D1 - 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL
- Cropped D1 - 704x480 NTSC or 704X576 PAL
- Half D1 - 352x480 NTSC or 352x576 PAL
- SIF standard - 352x240 NTSC or 352x288 PAL
AUDIO FORMATS AND BIRATES:
MPEG LAYER 2 AUDIO - 64kbps to 384kbps inclusive
DD AC3 - 64kbps to 448kbps
WAV - Uncompressed PCM audio only.
PCM - Uncompressed PCM audio only.
AIFF- Uncompressed PCM audio only.
AUDIO SAMPLING RATE:
16 bit 48khz only.
Some other information:
DVD specification requires a 4:2:0 chroma format.
GOP size is 18 frames max for NTSC and 15 frames max for PAL.
As you can see from all that, Sefy's SxVCD template should be fine for video, but the audio sampling rate will need to be upped to 48khz. I'll give it a go over the weekend.
Sorry for the confusion.

REiREi, try resampling your audio to 48kHz first...
that's what I have to do to get SpruceUp to work.
I have burned several DVD-Rs with MPEG-1 (VCD-compliant)
and it works great. I have used MyDVD (careful- there
are two versions!) and SpruceUp. I have done MPEG-1
with standard VCD bitrates (1.15 kb/s), as well as
higher (2.07 kb/s).
The result is great... hours of video on one disc!
The higher bitrate looks a lot nicer, but doesn't play
on my Pioneer, but it does play on my Apex-500.
I tried using MPEG-2 VBR instead, and I think it
works even better (higher compression and more
standard). The problem is that standalone
DVD players have trouble with MPEG-1 with higher
bit rates, but they are built to read up to 9 kb/s
with MPEG-2 so I think this is the way to go.
I hate resampling my audio for SpruceUp and MyDVD
because I have had some sync problems. What's the
best way? (I capture with my all-in-wonder card) -
Thanks every1.
My experiments so far:
SpruceUp:
will accept m1v but still rejects accompanying mp2 or mpa. I have to re-mux into a 48k mpeg and it will accept it.
So i test burnt a 23min short clip on dvdrw, windvd playback fine, but my standalone Pioneer 3310 (the SE Asian gold version of DV-545) will only load the 1st few frames then returned to the menu : (
I tried MyDVD but it takes a very long time resampling (in fact it hanged during building the audio)...
Maybe i'll try doing a Half D1 MPEG2...
Damn, there must be some easier way - it's a very good idea to put all those TV series VCD's onto 1 dvd...
How i wish... (any programmers out there?) there would be a program that would batch takes in all those VCD .dat files and make them to either mpeg1 48k or Half D1 mpeg2... all ready to burn by SpruceUp.
Anyway, thanks a lot guys and keep posting all your experiments/results. : ) -
well first SpruceUP is the worst of the DVD authoring packages for all the reasons you have discussed so far...go over to Doom9.net and lok at their guides for miniDVD, which is author the same as DVD
DVD Wise, DVD Maestro, DVD Virtuoso, DVD motion, and if you can hang with the pros, try Scenarist -
Oh, just to clarify what I just said, the MPEG-2
I'm capturing is 352 x 240 since I don't really
see a need for res higher than that when doing VHS. -
alkieman, thanks for the testing and information! it's much appriciated!

heres how i did it to create a dvd with all the lethal weapon movies plus extras on one disc
use smartripper as you would for dvdrips
same as dvd2avi
in tmpeg use the usual dvdrip mpeg1 settings but change the resolution to 720 by 576.
use spruceup and it accepts the mpeg1 files with no probs , create menus and chapters and bobs youre uncle
-
have you guys tried the new nero...it supports dvd burning.. just wondering how good it works...i am considering the world of dvd burning...by the way hwo much are you guys paying for discs?
