  1. I've been getting this Power Calibration error with v5.5 and after reading in this forum I discovered that I need better quality cdr(w) and after purchasing and trying, new ones worked great....but....I have 100 of this crappy discs and I was wondering if anyone has figure out how to "trick" Nero into burning on low quality media (digital media cdr's from Circuit city....these are the only ones that will work in my dvd stand alone - Sony S560D ). If you have any info, you can e-mail me directly or just post.

    Thanx in advance!

  3. N76,
i just updated to windows 2000 pro, sp2, ie 5.5, and nero 5.5.0.4 and after a week or so, and about a dozen cdrs burnt successfully, i too, am getting this PowerCalibrationError, when burning a anywhere from 4x to 12x, mainly svcds with nero.
I've tried two different brands of media (fuji n sony); nero, cdrwin, if i do a simulation with nero it simulates properly.
I tried the same methods under win 98se and win2k pro (same pc, dual boot) and it still comes up with the same calibration error.

Could this be nero related or could something else be corrupted?
I also have a spressa usb 4x, that im gonna try tonight, with the same media, and see if its my plextor 12x , scsi, burner or nero or not.

  4. I had exactly the same problem with my drive, but it also failed in cloneCD, I borrowed a friends drive and that works perfectly so I'm assuming it's a hardware problem, I'll tell you after I take it to the shop and get them to check it.

  5. Not sure if this will help, but I have a friend who was having similar problems with an external USB
drive. He was advised to get himself an externally powered USB hub, to reduce the draw on his
computer's USB power source. This worked for him.

  6. thanx b_once,
i do gotz a usb hub, ill give that a shot, doubt it will help though--once i connect my spressa (bought from the very first batch that came out so its an older one) to my main pc.

Plextor tech support said that the power calibration error is due to bad media, (i tried another media, that has worked before wit no probz, and it still gave the error), or a faulty drive.
Faulty drive? hard to believe it suddenly became faulty. Or some of us are suddenly experiencing faulty drives. But then again, ive been burning lotz, and da pc has been running non-stop 24/7 for three weeks, burning, ripping, editing, d/l'n, etc...so maybe its just the cpu thats also taxed to da max.

someone on another forum suggested checkin the
    * aspi layer under windows for corruption and/or updating to the latest version.
    * updating to the latest nero 5.5.1.0 or so (newer than the 5.5.0.4)
    * reverting back to an earlier version of nero, 5.0xx or so
    * trying another software to burn, clonecd, cdrwin, (which i did)
    * recloning the os, i.e. ghosting back from a backup image, if one is available.

I'll try dat, and if it still dont work. the 20x burners just came down in price...

  7. i'm pretty sure it is drives gone bad.

i had a slew of bad ricoh mp7040a drives.. i swear, i had like 6 different drives, because those things just kept going out on me. it was ridiculous. but i got the power calibration error most of the time.

maybe burning at 1x would work.. but i doubt it.
