I mistakenly ripped an mpeg file from a vcd incorrectly.

I right click as usual on the .dat file, then I choose EXTRACT BUT FILTER ONLY M2F2 MPEG FRAMES, and usually you have to name your file ending in .mpg

However, I mistyped and inputed .mpt

This was never caught by me because it ripped as usual. Only today when I tried to retrieve it to play it, it didn't work. The size of the file is correct and reflective of what I ripped, however the name was inputed incorrectly and so it's not recognized. My source disc has since been long gone and so I cannot re-rip. Experts, any way to salvage this?

    Thanx in advance!

so rename the file to .mpg. Go into My Computer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View and untick the tickbox that says "hide extensions for known file types". Click OK and you should now see the extensions on all your files. left-click once on the file in question (so it's selected), then press F2. You should now be able to change the filename and extension. Change the extension to .mpg. Once you're finished, just press enter. You should now have a mpg !
    If in doubt, Google it.

    jimmalenko,

Thank you so much!! That was awesome!! How come it didn't work when I simply renamed it by right clicking?

I had renamed it with .mpg and click enter. The file then conformed with the rest of my files, meaning the extension .mpg was automatically hidden. I thought that was it, But it didn't work.

Your method worked!! Thanks again so much!

I don't know exactly why your way didn't work, but I suspect that you had the file extensions hidden. So if you have file.mpt, it only shows up as file when you browse to it. If you rename this as is, you end up with file.mpg being displayed, which is in fact file.mpg.mpt because you have to account for adding the extension on the end. This is NOT an mpg file !

The way I described makes sure that you are changing the "right-most" extension of the file, which is the one that windows reads and acts upon.
    If in doubt, Google it.

That would be my guess as well.
