I have not been able to burn a CD at over 8x since I installed this thing. I have spent alot of time with Yamaha on the phone running test. My system should be able to burn at this speed. But it can only do it with small transfers. It test fine with large files but if you try to burn a full cd, I get underrun errors and burn a coaster. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I forgot to mention it is a 16x 12x 40x.

  2. Are you getting buffer underruns when copying disc to disc?
What version of windows you running?
Is DMA checked for the drive?
Tried different brand of CDR discs?

With Yamaha we tried both with DMA checked and unchecked. I am running windows 2000 professional. I have tried every type of media I could find, even Yamaha which they recommended.

I also have a Yamaha 16x12x40x but I haven't tested the burner with a high speed CDR/CDRW yet because I have nothing to burn in the mean time.

Are they cheapo media or band name? I once bought some blank CDRs that said they were 12X but if I went over 8X I would get an error message. I'd stick with something like Verbatim, TDK or Kodak.

I have tried Verbatim, TDK, Imation, Memorex, Yamaha, pretty much all the major brands.

  9. Htown,

I had the same problem and was only able to fix it when I installed the proprietary IDE controller driver for my motherboard. The disk came with my motherboard and it was called something like "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller". The one that came with windows didn't work correctly.

    Warehouse,

You are a freakin' genious. I just burned a bunch of VCD's at 16x. Thanks for your help. Six months with this burner and I can finally use it at top speed. Can't wait to rip some audio and see if if can now get 40x rips they advertise.

Not a genious, just discovered it when I reloaded my OS. Was burning at 16x and then after the reload it went to 8X. Haven't been able to get the 40X rip but let me know if you have any luck. What ripper are you using?
