Hi,
I have a cable with a male SCART in one end and a S-video contact plus two RCA contacts (red + white) in the other. I bought this cable at an earlier time, ie it was not delivered with the video card mentioned below.
I want to have the SCART contact connected to the output on my Digital TV box and the S-video connected to the input on my video card. (It is input, I know that, ie its not a TV-out contact).
Now this doesnt work, so I was wondering...
1) How do I know the above cable is the right one, ie can I tell which side is in and out repectively?
2) Could it be that the cable is the wrong 'way' ? ie S-video input and SCATR output?
3) Does there exists cables that are both-ways? How can I identify such a cable?
I can send pics if the above explanation is too unclear.
Thanks
Peter

Yet again I had to find the answer myself to my problem.
Cables of this kind do exist with different 'directions'. ie SCART -> S-video and S-video -> SCART, however it is hard (impossible?) to identify which direction the cable is meant to be used.
Best way is to have a SCART/S-video adapter with IN/OUT switch (which I had) and then a S-video to S-video cable.
I thought this was the kind of information I was supposed to find here, but I guess I was wrong. -
for a normal scart cable, it's both in and out.
let's say you have 2 vcrs, connected with 1 scart cable. if you set vcr1 to play and vcr2 to record, the i/o will be out/in. if you set vcr1 to record and vcr2 to play, the i/o will be in/out.
so you don't really need an in/out switch, unless you have more devices and want more control of the signal flow.Music was my first love, and it will be my last -

it's irrelevant if the cable is scart2scart or scart2svideo or whatever. what i mean is that if you use a scart input (which the topic starter does), the cable can handle input or output automatically, so there's no use for a switch. (although a switch may be useful for other reasons.)Music was my first love, and it will be my last -
Let me just add this: I had a cable with a SCART male contact in one end and a S-video male in the other end (connected to my LeadTek TV-card).
It did NOT work, so it cant be both-ways. Other info I found on the net tells me the same thing.
I then bought a converter, which is a SCART-contact with an IN/OUT switch, and also with composite and svideo female contacts on it. I connected this one to my TV card using a svideo male/svideo male cable.
And after setting the switch to OUT...viola, it worked.
I have checked the SCART-specs (http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/eprebel/SoundAndVision/Engineering/SCART.html) and its obvious that both sides are capable of in and out communication. Unfortunately it seems like all cables are not completely wired. I suppose this is for cost reasons. Also, I know no realiable way to see from the outside how a cable is wired....... -
For convertions like those, I use simply adaptors. Euroscart one side, RCA/S-Video the other side.
I don't know if this terminology used elsewhere, but here in Hellas when we wish to use a full wired SCART we asking for a EuroSCART (the original french one). When we order simply as "SCART" we mean the one way cable. -
I didn't know that 1way scart cables exist. I know a 1way SCART/RCA adaptor exists, which is often delivered with a DV video camera.
Anyway, I will consider this in my future posts.Music was my first love, and it will be my last
