  1. hi just started using tmpgenc dvd and love it.

I am getting raw video from dvio - getting mpeg2 from tmpgenc
then making the disk in tmpgenc dvd author.

I seem to max out space with one hour of video.

I know with other packages I can force the audio and get 1:20. any way to do this?

Do I need to do it with the source file? tmpgenc
do I need to sacrifice vid qulality? I am willing to give up audio but not video

    how can I do that?

    Thanks

  2. Audio. Use compressed audio, mp2 is fine if you are in europe, TmpGenc can encode this. If in US Ac3 is prefferred as not all US players can handle mp2.

Video. Encode in TmpGenc using 2-pass VBR for best quality. Max bitrate 9000 (with compressed audio), min 2000, average, whatever you need for the playing time. For home video keep it as high as poss (6000 should be Ok for most situations.)

  3. Thanks

Does the 2 pass VBR take much longer?

Where in tmpgenc can I set up the AC3?

You Don't. TMPGEnc will do mp2 or the newer one also does LPCM wave

Approx twice as long as CBR and 50% to 75% longer than CQ mode, but IMHO, its worth it (CQ produces equivalent quality but at the expense of unpredictable filesize).

  6. So ..
If I have a RAW Avi that I put into tmpgenc and I set it to 2pass VBR

And I use the following params:

Max bitrate 9000 (with compressed audio), min 2000, average, whatever you need for the playing time. For home video keep it as high as poss (6000 should be Ok for most situations.)

    Then
    1. Will my Quality look the same? As my default CBR
    2. how much MAX can I get onto the DVD

    Thanks again guys

It will look as good as and maybe better than CBR 6000.

The MAX playing time you can fit on a DVD depends on bitrate (AVG if VBR). Its actually more common, and easier, to determine what bitrate is required for a specific playing time. There is an online (java) bitrate calculator in the tools section that is good fro this.

In terms of quality, Home video is notoriosly difficult to encode to mpeg. This is mainly due to camera shake casued by handheld cameras along with poor lighting. These problems eat up the available bitrate. If you are happy to keep your DVD playing time to around and hour, you can sue max bitrates and so maximise quality.
