DivX (Doctor) and Xvid encoding - A whole bunch of questions

Hey,

I have a few questions for you to muse over.

1. When is Xvid 1 going to be released all nice and good and as good as divx?

2. How is it that Xvid, despite not having any income has managed to remain pretty much neck and neck with DivX with is a leading commercial codec?

3. Is divx doctor a good way to encode divx?

4. Is there any way to remove the little divx icon that gets put over divx encoded files?

5. Will xvid files now always be conpatible with later Xvid releases in the future?

7. I´m encoding cartoon VCD´s with Div. I find that if it encode it from about 200mb to 60, then it remains almost the same quality, but I find the black lines get quite blurry and the video definitely loses some color. To solve this should I simply up the bitrate, or will heavily encoded files always get this effect.

8. Why is it that MPEG1 files end in .mpg, mpeg2 files end in .mpg, but mpeg4 files end in .avi ?

You have to take things in historical context. DivX was not the leading commercial MPEG 4 codec until just recently. It was developed during a time when it was definitely not making any money and still considered a pirate codec. XviD was an open source branch of ? the same project. Someone who took more notice during the development days of DivX 4 and DivX 5 codec could probably tell you more.

3. Is divx doctor a good way to encode divx?

It is okay. If you have VirtualDub and the DivX codec installed, you can do pretty much the same though.

4. Is there any way to remove the little divx icon that gets put over divx encoded files?

The logo is not encoded into the video. This is a function of the decoder. Simply enter the decoder options and untick the box for displaying the logo.

5. Will xvid files now always be conpatible with later Xvid releases in the future?

"Always" is a long time. Never assume anything when something is still in development.

Make sure that you install the Lame MP3 ACM codec. It works for me. I can't comment on OGG.

Are you saying that you are encoding VCDs from DivX?

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 have their own specific file structures. MPEG-4 probably does as well, but the more common application is to use MPEG-4 as a codec and use some other file container (e.g., AVI, Quicktime, RealMedia, etc.) You can encode ".MP4" files with DivX but I remember reading that there were some disadvantages when compared to using the AVI container (something about the timing/tracking data being at the front of the file).

OK, I got that lame codec, but it took a bit of experimentation to figure out that it has to be extracted the the system32 directory to use it in virtualdub. How on earth am I meant to figure that out by myself?

Actually, with regards to installing the LAME MP3 ACM codec, if you clicked on the above link and read the user comments (specifically mine), you would have found a link to here: http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/install_lame.htm that shows you how to install the LAME codec the "proper" way...
