    Hi all,

    Got another problem (sheesh):

    CDRW: Artec 24x10x40
    OS: WIn2K SP4
    CPU: AMD K6-2 400MHz
    CDR media: Princo

Using CloneCD, I copied one VCD with no problem. On subsequent attempted copies I get the dreaded "Medium Speed Error" for every disc that I've tried (about 6 discs). I've dropped the write speed to 1x, yet I still get the error message. When I use a CDRW disc (Memorex), I have no problem writing. Hmph.

I tried to make a copy using Nero (5.5. something) and it did make the copy (at 4x), but when I played back the disc, the video and sound broke up every now and then. I suspect the problem was due to using the 4x write speed (too fast, I guess). And Nero won't let me write at any speed lower than 4x. Bleah.

I thought it might be that my CDRW drive is crap, so I tried copying again, and got the same problem with the Princo discs...

I thought Princo discs were supposed to be good quality. Anyone have any ideas why I'm having so many problems with these discs?

    Thanks for your help.

  2. dony know about cdr but have heard only bad things about6 princo dvdr. I would assume that the media is bad. try and isolate the errors burn on a diff pc, try at low speeds, diff burning prog etc.

edit it apears youve tried my suggestion, sorry didnt see that. I would assume its media as different progs fail but different discs work./

    Thanks for your response.

Um, It's Princo CDR media not DVDR media. Do you think the CDR media is as bad as the DVDR media?

I'm only trying to use the Princo CDR media, 'cause it's the only CDR media my Sony DVP-S360 (supposedly) likes...

I guess it's time to buy a new DVD player, eh?

You can buy a 'plays anything' Apex for $40. Easier than having to deal with crappy Princo's.

Thanks, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this problem and get a little more educated about the topic as well...

Well, I updated the firmware on my Artec CDRW drive, but the medium error problem still exists...

    Damn. This sucks.

Princos suck big time. Bought 4 Princo CDRs in jewel cases. 3 were coasters.

File the apparent solution to this problem under "weird":

After reading a couple of the posts pertaining to my Sony DVP-S360 player, the people who had success with the Princo CDR discs burned them at a speed of 24X... I had always read that if there was a medium speed error you should lower your burn speed and when copying VCDs you should keep your burn speed to 4X or below...

Taking a "I've got nothing to lose" mentality, I tried to copy the VCD at a burn speed of 24X and Voila! It copied with no problems! WTF??? I tried another copy and pefection again. To top it off, the discs even play on my non-CDR friendly Sony... I am totally without speech... So much for conventional wisdom...

It still seems rather inexplicable... I'll have to do some more reading on this... And make more copies to validate my findings...
