  1. I recently purchased a VCD and I wish to extract the .dat file from it.
However when I put the VCD into my PC it appears blank, with 0 bytes and now info on it.

When I put it into my standalone DVD player the movie loads up and I can watch it perfectly.

Can anyone please help to suggest how I can get the .dat file out of the VCD.

    Kindest Regards

  2. open it with windows explorer and copy it. Or type in the dos prompt your cd or dvd-rom letter ("d:" or "e:") and type dir. enter the directory that contains the .dat file (cd dir) and type copy *.dat "c:/mpg" for example...

    does it works?

  3. Thanks for your replies. Just wish it was that simple.

I have extracted hundreds of VCDs before but this one is different, its the second time I have seen this kind of thing so I believe maybe it is some form of protection.

When I put the cd into my PC drive it displays nothing as if the CD is blank, there are no directories or any files.

However when I use the cd inside my normal DVD/vcd player the movie plays straight away. Its just a normal 700 MB CD-R but for some reason the files do not show up.

Is there anyone who can help

  4. The VCD doesn't have a filesystem...

Try extracting the VCD as an image first and then try VCDGear, VCDXRIP or ISOBuster on it.

  5. Thank you.

I managed to make a nrg image from the cd which is 648 meg.

However when I run isobuster on the image all i get is a file called track 1.

But that is it, no directories or anything.

When I try to extract it, it just says isobuster error etc.

I think I will have to give up

    Thanks anyway

  7. Sorry to spoil your theory but this is a original vcd, its a chinese movie and I bought from a legitimate store. No one stole anything and no one is going to steal anything.

I dont think that your "sorry" was genuine. . LOL. Relax. Maybe it was just copyprotected with a mild progrm that most likely can be broken. Dont know if this ever came up, but did you try dvd decrypter(even tho its a vcd). Actually, I just load the vcd disc, go to that drive, right click to Explore and I see all the folders. iso buster works also.

Turn off your Auto Run. Use VCDGear and rip that DAT to MPEG. There's no way to copy protect a VCD, it's jsut fooling your computer with computer software, stop loadign the software and the problem will go away (reboot and uninstall may be required).

  10. Thank you all, I managed to extract the MPEG out of the VCD by using isobuster on the cd once turning off autorun.

Still no directories were listed by I managed to convert the track that exisited within the VCD into an MPEG which I think maybe MPEG2.

    Could be a SVCD

    Anyways mystery solved now.

    Thanks again

  11. Isn't that what I said before?

This is a common copy protection method on Asian VCDs. They make it without a filesystem. If you make an image of it and use ISOBuster, you can still extract the MPEG tracks.
