All,
I have looked through the links but cant find a suitable answer to my problems so here goes.
I have some duplicated dvds that are NTSC i.e. they are on dvd-r media in ntsc format. I want to let one of my friends who has a sony player borrow one but the player cannot handle ntsc (all in black and white).
I want to find out how I can verify what region a dvd is and also how can i make it into a region free dvd.
I generally use Ulead DVD Movie factory, dvd decryptor, instant copy for my dvds.
I assumed if i ripped the dvd to my pc using dvd decryptor then using it again to burn a dvd that would make it region free.
I can make pal into ntsc and visa versa with mpegs for vcds using tmpgenc but with dvds im not so sure.
Can anybody help? Apologies about the content of the thread - i know these type of issues have been covered time and time again, then again im only assuming the region thing is a problem with the player.

The fact that the DVD will play shows that the issue is not region related, but instead your problem is to do with standards i.e. your DVD's are NTSC instead of PAL. This is borne out by the monochrome pictures you are getting on the TV which obviously cannot accept NTSC.
I'm sure that there is guides on this site that you can use to convert. Good hunting!Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. -
After ripping, do the following
OPEN IFO.edit
open the VIDEO_TS folder with the DVD CONTENT..
navigate to the VIDEO_TS.IFO
load this into the IFO EDIT application....
Now hit the region free button... The sreen should read ENJOY your region freed DVD...or ask you to assign a region code if its required at this point...THEN HIT SAVE...your ripped IFO will be overwritten and IFO will suggest it can write over the corresponding .BUP file as well..agree and repeat this for each file in the foler (IFO FILE- THAT IS)
if it need to be modified...you'll get a message..if the ifo has no region info..it'll tell you that tooo..
good luck -
what kind of connection is he running? Usually most newer PAL equipment will support NTSC signal but only through a certain port. Usually its through an RGB Scart lead.
