How can I create a scrolling text info chapter much like many DVD's have in a VCD or SVCD?

: Project that created this question :

I am trying to make a 'VIDEO' resume, with clips of me working at different temp jobs in the area that happen to also of been on the local news

I would like the personal manager that receives this disc to be able to insert the disc into their computer, the player start up and the first screen to be my resume {w/ copies of letters of recommendation} and allow the manager to scroll up and down to view all the pages..

Then click on a link that would display the local news media reports that.

Can this be done... what would really be great is if I could just change the 'resume file' so that I could personalize each copy burned to the party that the video resume is being sent to.

You could do what you want with VCD but it would be fairly limited. You'd be much better off using the DVD format. Much higher quality and much more interactivity. Just author a DVD in any dvd authoring software and then burn it on cdr media, thus making it a mini-dvd. It won't play on most hardware players but it should play perfectly on any pc. You can use media player classic to autoplay it. I make these all time for friends and clients and the one I made for myself has already gotten me about 5 job interviews.

What software do you use to create the 'user interactive' scrolling text? [like the scroll bar on your browser'

Also what software will correctly burn a MINI-DVD? as the two that I have do not seem to burn anything 'readable' to disc and only makes coasters.

I can create a MPEG file that looks like scrolling text.. but that is not really users interactive.

The only format an "out of the box" Windoze installation knows how to play is mpg1 - Not VCD, not DivX, not DVD, so if you want to make it easy for your personal manager, do a mpg1. Scrolling texts can be made with Substation Alpha (and rendered with VirtualDub) but it wont be under user control.

My current buring software installed a auto loading player for the VCD/DVD when burning the media.. this way even if the personal manager doens not have a media player installed on there system.. one is on the disc..

That's why you include the media player, the audio and video decoders, and the necessary DVD, VCD or SVCD navigator plugin on the disk itself. This way it will play on any out of the box pc running windows.

I use media player classic and the intervideo mpeg1/2 decoder and also its DVD navigator. I also use the free AC3 filter for audio. Media player classic autoplays the disk and uses these for playback regardless of what is or isn't installed on the computer.

DavidEC I'm not entirely sure what kind of effect you are talking about. It sounds like you want to simulate how a web browswer works with a side scrolling bar? You can't do exactly this using the dvd standard and you definitely can't do it with VCDs or SVCDs. You would have to simulate it using stills and video transitions. For instance, the side bar won't be anything more than a button. When you click on the lower half of it, it plays a transition video that shows the screen scrolling. Then it links to a still of the lower half of the screen. Basically you have to think of it like a slideshow.

You could simply make a real web page and put it on the disk and have it autoload. That would be real easy.

Then again, you may be talking about something completely different. Little more information please?

Anyway, I author all of my mini-DVDs and DVDs in Sonic Scenarist, but any dvd authoring package will work. It exports all of the .vobs, .bups, and .Ifos to a VIDEO_TS folder. From there I load it into the free IMGTools classic and it creates an .iso file. From there I burn it in the, also free, DVD Decryptor. If I use its DVD option and dvd media, then I've made a DVD. If I switch it to cd output and burn on a cdr, I've made a mini-DVD.

Yes that is what I was hoping to do.. how is it that many older 'Warner Brothers' DVD releases had scrolling text boxes in the 'Actor Bio' area of the DVD??

By the way thanks for the replies!

Can you give me an example of a couple titles with this feature cause I dont think I've ever seen it? You can simulate a scrolling screen to a certain extent. The bar is just a button like anything else. You click the bottom of it and it links to a transition that looks like the screen itself is scrolling down, but its just a regular video track. After that plays it goes to a still menu of the lower half, whatever you scrolled down to. Hit the top part of the scroll bar and it triggers another transition back to the original menu. Its all just an elaborate slideshow. There's no way to have an actual scrolling bar like in a web browser...at least I've never heard of such a thing.
