Wow!
So many responses, most thinking they are "learned".
Well, yeah, I saw the news last night, they had 30 seconds on the war in Iraq, we're kicking their butts.
Hey, this is the only "Superpower" left. And we are having problems. We are having servicemen killed on a daily, or almost daily basis.
This is not to be political. I don't want this thread to be shut down.
I kinda like it. You rarely hear a question from people from other countries, without an apology for their poor English. As I have said in a number of posts, please do not apologize; your diction, typing is better than 75% of the native borns. Many of them, I think, use a dictionary to get the right words. I know one German told me he was slow to respond because it took time to find the proper words in his German-English Dictionary.
Back to the "fat people" in this country. Everybody wants to be sated when they eat.
Prasanna,
I don't know what Hindu, if Hindu, sect, you belong to. Are you the ones who consider the cow sacred? I think this is true in India, isn't it, some will eat beef, some worship the cow? Here, we probably don't eat enough beef. The medical "authorities" have declared that eating beef will kill you. They are correct, if you read the right reports. Beef-eaters drop dead at 87 years of age. Of course, yoghurt eaters, regardless of the Sherpas longevity, drop dead at 27
Has anyone ever wondered why we have those pointy teeth at the corners of their mouths? Hey, I love the acronym PETA, People Eating Tasty Animals.
CP,
Try wearing a Cleveland Browns jacket to a Pgh Steelers game, or vice versa. You will learn whether we "love" each other that much.
Probably not as bad as a European "football" game, where you might have 2 or 3 hundred thousand watching, and, maybe, have fans crushed storming the field..
Personally, I love soccer. My g'daughter plays it, 11 years old, and I would not miss a practice, nor a game. But, a good soccer match is 1-0, or 2-1, and the US mentality is 112-110, in basketball, 13-12 in baseball, 48-46 in our football. I hate to think what we would think about a cricket match, where a batter might score 75 runs before he is replaced. I think that's the way it works, no? I think I read in Guiness about a cricket batter who made a horrendous number of runs. Will have to look it up.
No, for the majority of the Europeans, it seems to be a "day trip" to visit the "South of France", or Belgium, or whereever.
For an American, Canadian, Mexican, it's 3 to 7000 miles to get anywhere, other than Canada and Mexico. Hell, to go across the country is 3000 miles, to Florida, from here, 1500 miles. That IS a major trip, unless you can afford an air flight, and with a family, most likely prohibitive.
What does it cost a Brit to take the Chunnel to visit the "Continent"? 8 pounds or something?
I have been to a bunch of countries, even to north of Dallas-Fort Worth, for McLeods enlightenment, Big Springs, to be exact.
All who wish to visit here, welcome! I hope I run into you. I would like to speak to you. I still have relatives in Yugoslavia, with whom I have not spoken in years. Loved them. Wish to get in contact with them, again, am trying, but, with the Clinton War, hard to do. We DID destroy a good bit of their infrastructure. And, you know what, the, what, Canadian prosecutor, Carla Negroponte is having trouble making "war crimes" stick. Shit, why couldn't Clinton have had a 3rd term. He would have settled that. Screw'm all, we'[ll tell you what the rules are. And, since Madeleine was ignored by the little Yugoslav kids, she was pissed, I'll fix your asses. Oops, that might be interpreted as political. Not meant to be.
Ah, well, has this been too long? Probably. Sorry.
Cheers,
George

What are you drinking/smoking? May I have some?
...The medical "authorities" have declared that eating beef will kill you. They are correct......
A) The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
(B) On the other hand, the French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
(C) The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
(D) The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
(E) Conclusion: Eat & drink what you like. It's speaking English that kills you.

Holistic,
I have never thought of it that way!!!
I knew most of the others. Red wine, cheeses, fats, rich sauces, etc.
Did you know that a few years ago, when cigarette sales to China China, as opposed to Taiwan rose, the know it alls said the cancer rate in China had skyrocketed?
Of course, in the US, they blame smoking for lung cancer, lip cancer, esophogeal cancer, and then some other, remotely possible connectiions.
However, in China, when the cigarette rate went to way over the US rate, smokes per person, per day (I smoke a pack or more per day, I'm pret'near 59 years old, pretty good shape, for an old fart.)
Anyhow, the "statisticians" said the Chinese cancer rate had skyrocketed, but the cancers were not the same as the US cancers were. To be facetious, they got cancer of the left knee, cancer of the big toe, etc.
None of the cancers the US smokers got. But, it has to be smoking that did it.
I don't know if you are a smoker or a former smoker, but have you ever noticed that the most rabid antis are former smokers, as evidencede by the new mayor of New York City, Bloomberg, the billionaire? He quit about 25 years ago, and has outlawed smoking in any public establishment within the city limits.
None so righteous as a former sinner.
Cheers,

Holistic,
Ti resuminish po srpski? Jasam Djuro, el Djuric, kako ochesh zovti.
I'm trying to quit the English, extend my life.
You can keep speaking English,if you wanna die young. -
Poor George - sounds like your field order is reversed.
Have I ever mentioned that the site is having trouble coming up with anything interesting?
Well here you go, I was just educating myself.

Won't appeal to the point-N-click snot nosed DVD rippers but intresting reading none the less.
So what are you drinking/smoking

Jasam Djuro, el Djuric, kako ochesh zovti
And Jasam Djuro , didn't he just become a free agent and trade to the Philadelphia Flyers. -
Holistic,
Man, I just opened my 2002 Guiness book to confirm your statament, and found that there is no-one by that name.
There are others who have scored ridiculous numbers to an American, why, I don't know, as we go wild when a basketball player gets 50 or 60 points, in a 100 point game.
The best I can find is 188 not out, by Gary Kirsten, SA v. UAR, in 1996..
No "real" Murrican would ever sit still long enough to watch the same guy just keep whacking away at the ball with a flat stick, not for 188 "not out".
I assume this means he just kept on whacking away at it???? And scoring?
Nah, un American. We wanna see a whole buncha batters. Preferably all getting hits so that maybe 10 or 15 batters get to the plate.
Who is your hero, the batsman, or the bowler? Is that the right terminology?
I was just ready to submit and saw your last, the Poor George thing.
I'm not pitying myself, it's just that it is not as interesting as it once was. I am still not doing DVD burns, so they are not all that interesting.
I have made a whole bunch of adequate VCDs-SVCDs-CVDs, and they all work, and I'm tired of buying DVDs that I may watch once, so why copy-backup?
Anyhow, if anyone starts a thread that seems to go over the edge, it's shut down .
Ahhh, Holistic, I just checked the book again, and Sir Donald did set a record, 95.14%, 28,067 runs, in 338 innings, 43 not outs.
I don't know what an inning is, but to score nearly 80 per has got to be pretty goddamn fantastic. And what is a "not out"
You know, once upon a time, our Sam Snead, premier golfer was talking to Ted Williams, and Ted said, "You know, Sam, I don't know how you can say golf is tougher than Baseball. We got a round club, the ball is coming in at 90 miles an hour. You got a flat club, the ball is just sittin' there. How can that be tougher?"
Sam said,"Well, you know, Ted, you don't gotta go up in the bleachers and hit it again."
Ah, well,
Cheers, (You think we'll be shut down? Again?)
Still for Holistic:
Nah, they don't play for anybody. If you understood, Jasam Djuro, is Serbo-Croat for "I am George", el Djuric, is if you are from another province of Yugoslavia, and kako ochesh zovti, is pronounce it as you wish
Did I mention that I was able to make myself understood, without raising my voice, in a language other than English? Excuse me, I thought I had.
But you gotta admit, some of the Checzs? could afford a vowel or two. -
Holistic,
I keep re-reading your last post and I laugh my ass off. I'm not Juri Hrdina, "Hey, Juri, you wanna buy a vowel?", nor am I Jaromir Jagr, who could also use a vowel or two.
Nah, I'm a Pens fan.
Most of ours can be pronounced by anyone, now. -
......and Sir Donald did set a record, 95.14%, 28,067 runs, in 338 innings, 43 not outs. ........
99.94 average is for "Test" matches - the 5 day 'dramas'
http://www.cricket.org/link_to_database/PLAYERS/AUS/B/BRADMAN_DG_02000492/ARTICLES/BRA...MAN_STATS.html
The man was what Babe Ruth was to baseball.
O and a 'not out' well that pretty must means the same in any language - he wasn't put out i.e: lasted the duration of the game. (inning)
Don't try and understand the game - just like i don't bother trying to figure out hockey or gridiron - just accept it.

Hockey is easy, but I've actually look at the RULE to Cricket and it STILL looks like someone is making it up as they go along.
-
I'll copy the page and post it if you like. It doesn't matter. It sounds impressive enough without understanding it.
And Hockey sounds a lot like Soccer, or Futbol, if you like, just 5 on the ice plus a goalie, rather than 10. Off sides, etc., seem to follow Soccer, penalty shot, penalty kick, etc.
I'll give all the credit in the world to a Soccer player. As I said, my 11 year old g'daughter plays it, 30 minutes of non-stop action, in their case 5 minute half time, 30 more after the half, and there have been games where kids didn't show, so they had no relief, they played the whole game.
Beats the F outa a US football team where there is 10 seconds of bigass pipple grunting at each other, 5 minutes to get the next play organized, 10 more seconds of exhilarating grunting.
You might get the idea that I would not turn around to watch a pro Football game if it were on the field behind me. You would not be wrong.
A soccer game, however, I would go so far as to change the channel for, not to mention watch every minute of the games my babydoll plays in/practices for. Hey, I'm grandpap, I take her to them all, watch every practice. Wouldn't miss one for the world.
Make what you will of it.
Cheers,
George -
I wouldn't try understanding Cricket by reading the rules as it'll take forever, better to just watch a game. I recommend a one-dayer as a test match drags on to much.
As for Donald Bradman, the man is a legend. I believe the top score is 334 not out and he had one of the highest batting averages. Not out refers to when a player survives the innings without being bowled/caught/stumped.
