  1. Hey all,

I've decided to admit defeat here, and ask the acknowledged Gods on the subject of burning some SVCDs. Hope thats enough sucking up to begin with 8)

Ohkay ... Last year, I downloaded and sucessfully burned and watched a few TVRips posted to usenet - everything was fine.

Now the new season has started, obviously I wanted to do the same again, except I keep hitting a problem in that I can't get to watch the burned mpeg on my Sony S535 player (remember, last year this all worked perfectly fine, same brand CDRWs everything - even the same CDWrite and software).

Some bright spark told me (or I think I read it on here somewher) that it could be down to the bitrate that the mpeg was encoded at, so I thought I would have a check. I've tried VirtualDub and TMPGEnc, and NEITHER of these two packages can even OPEN the mpeg, let along give me details about the file.

All this time, the mpeg will play fine, in players on my comp, such as WinDVD, PowerDVD, VideoLAN etc etc etc.

Any thoughts where I can go with this ?

Cheers guys .. I'm getting a real ear bending about this from the better half, so any assistance you can give would be great

this is the tool for BITRATE VIEWING

otherwise if you don't want to get that involved, right click the screen in POWER DVD when the file is playing, and select SHOW INFORMATION, almost right away a green legend will appear within the playback screen showing the bitrate..
If its variable the bitrate will change as the file plays- with VCD you don't want this

  3. Hey dcsos, thanks for the quick reply. I checked PowerDVD as you say, and yup your right there is a information section .. all this time using the product and I've never found that one .. amazing eh?

Can you define a bit more on your 'variable' please ? You mean where the video bitrate is changing ? I thought that would happen all the time, with all MPEG's .. even my DVD player shows the bitrate changing a bit on original DVDs. In this example, the MPEG that I have (shows as MPEG-2 - which I expected) alters abit , but only between say 2.0 and 2.4Mbps.

Are you saying that is the cause of the problem ?

Audio + Video bitrate max bitrate is 2778 kbit/s

YOU NEED TO FIX YOUR VARIABLE BIT RATE SO THE PLAYER READS THIS AT ALL TIMES

    Tmpgenc can do this

  5. Downloaded BitRate Viewer .. one one sample MPEG I have it shows as

    Num. of picture read: 1440
    Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
    Resolution: 480*480
    Aspect ratio: 16:9 Generic
    Framerate: 29.97
    Nom. bitrate: 2496000 Bit/Sec
    VBV buffer size: 112
    Constrained param. flag: No
    Chroma format: 4:2:0
    DCT precision: 10
    Pic. structure: Frame
    Field topfirst: Yes
    DCT type: Frame
    Quantscale: Nonlinear
    Scan type: ZigZag
    Frame type: Interlaced
    Notes:

With Birate of Peak 2737 (which is under your quoted max right?) but a Peak of 3072. Would this peak be causing the problem?

If I could open the file in TMPGEnc I could convert, but alas it will not open in that tool, nor Virtual Dub etc. I was actually supprised that BitRate managed to open it.

    MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR

    this is your file
you should put it on the timeline in pREMIERE 6.5 and output using the ADOBE MPEG ENCODER at the SVCD TEMPLATE with no changes in PARAMETERS

I THINK YOU CAN DO THE SAME in ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 6.0 or HIGHER

  7. Hmm OK . .I'll see what I can do with those two suggestions .. I dont have either, but I'll see a friend who I think has the ULead one.

Why do I need to convert it? What is special / different then about "MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR "? I've just downloaded the SVCD Test MPEG from this site, and using BitViewer this too shows up as Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR. But this file too, CANNOT be opened in the likes of TMPGEnc.

I'm not confident that I have all I need to .. could I be missing a codec or something here ? Something more fundamental ?

I'm not sure if its worth mentioning this, but the MPEG in question works fine on a few friends DVD player when burned exactly the same way as I'm burning it - the difference being the DVD player that is then played on. With mine being a Sony this player seems to be quite awkward in getting it working.

Thanks so much for the advise here m8 .. very appriciated.

  8. Don't forget your dvd player is a laser product, over time the laser lens picks up dirt and dust etc which prevents it from reading the data from the disc.

It could be that it just needs a clean, try a lens cleaner it's just like a reglar cd but has small brushes on to remove the dust, some of them even play music while they do it!!!
