  1. Ok....help me out here you pros =)

I have 3 .mpg files that i want to author as xsvcd with menus & chapters.

The .mpg files are ALREADY encoded as:

    Video: MPEG-2 720x576 25fps 5000kbps
    Audio: MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 48000hz 224kbps

These .mpg files played in WinDVD play correctly as 16:9 and look fantastic!

How can I get these .mpg files on CD...as an (X)SVCD with adding menus, adding chapters, and play as already encoded(16:9) on my home DVD player and TV.

My home DVD already plays these files if made into SVCD by dragging the .mpg file over to the MPEG folder in NERO and burned. BUT, when played on my home DVD they are squished on the screen and I cannot change the aspect ratio. If I copy the .mpg file from MPEG folder on the burned SVCD to my Desktop PC and play it in WinDVD it plays correctly in the original aspect ratio(16:9)

I want it on a CD to play as it was encoded. Help =)

    TIA

  2. standard TVs are 4:3....unless you have a widescreen TV, you shouldn't be making your xSVCD video output as 16:9.

16:9 and 4:3 do not completely refer to widescren and full screen, respectively...as there are non-anamorphic widescreen that is 4:3

i think you mean aspect ratios like 2.35:1, 1.85:1, etc.... with 1.33:1 referring to full screen.

    ---------

the aspect ratio of your xSVCD output video will depend on what type of TV you're going to watch it in, and they're not interchangable. if you're gonna watch your rip in a regular TV, make your output video be 4:3, if on a widescreen TV, then 16:9. irregardless of your output being 16:9 or 4:3, if you have your source settings correct in tmpgenc, you're output will still be widescreen/fullscreen, depending on the original DVD.

  3. I guess I meant....How can I make these files display "widescreen" or "letterbox" so that the video is not squished on my 4:3 TV?

    TIA

    tmpgenc:

    output video must be 4:3

advanced settings, source aspect ratio is very important. it will either be 16:9 or 4:3....if you use dvd2avi, it has an info box that tells you the source aspect ratio of the dvd....

also in advanced settings, image positioning method must be set correctly. i don't know which version of tmpgenc you use, but if there's

fit to screen (preserve aspect ratio) or full screen (preserve aspect ratio), then choose those.

  5. The files are already encoded.

Do I have to re-encode it to play "widescreen or letterbox" style with the black borders on the top and bottom?

  8. hrm...in your dvd player settings, did you make sure to set the video aspect ratio to 4:3??

  9. Ya, changing the DVD players settings don't seem to change anything.

I was assuming it was an option in the authoring (burning to disc as a (x)svcd) that controlled how it would be presented on the TV screen.

not really, it's the setting used during encoding. the .mpg you have is in NTSC right, not PAL?

dunno too much about PAL vs. NTSC...but since the resolutions for PAL and NTSC are different, among other differences, trying to play something PAL on a NTSC TV may be the cause of your problem.

My understanding of the MPEG-2 SVCD standard is that it does not support auto-resizing of 16:9 on a 4:3 TV using a stand alone DVD player. So you can make the SVCD at 16:9 but it will ONLY look normal on a 16x9 TV (or a 4:3 TV with a 16x9 "compression mode").

Now most computer based software media players allow you to convert just about any 16:9 source video into 4:3 but your DVD player will not do this. So if you only have a 4:3 TV you will have to re-encode to 4:3

The only alternative I can think of is to play the file back on your computer, using a MEDIA player that will resize it correctly to 4:3 and then watch it on a normal TV using your VIDEO CARD's TV output.
