  1. OK, I installed the quicktime plugin for TMPGEnc as instructed in the conversion tutorial, and got no joy. Then I discovered via the search facility that the tutorial failed to mention you also need to install quicktime, which I did.
Now TMPGEnc will read the MOV files, but when I try to convert them I only get video - no audio. Can anyone tell me what I have to do in order to make a conversion from MOV->MPG please?

If its not possible in TMPGEnc, what is the best / simplest to use?

    Cheers

  2. This may not be what you want to hear, and is probably not the only solution but this is what I do.

Open your .mov in Adobe premiere and place it on the timeline. Now save just the audio out as a .wav file. Use that as the audio input when you encode in Tmpgenc.

  4. RAD Video Tools is freeware from http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm
With it you can extract audio and/or video streams from Quicktime MOV format files.

Also look at EO Video, trialware from http://www.eo-video.com/overview.htm
It too can process Quicktime MOV format files.

I've used RAD Video Tools for years, and it's an excellent, easy to use program. I would suggest using it.

  6. Quicktime Pro will allow you to extract the sound file and save it as as wav.

  7. When I try to convert the audio to WAV using RAD tools I get:

    "Error opening audio input file"

even though the file will play using that god damn awful media player (quicktime)...

  8. sounds like copy protected mov file. i suggest u use a program called mov2avi to first convert it to an avi file. mov2avi is a command line program so if u have trouble using it download the gui which can be found in the tools section of this page. if that doesnt work it is copy protected

  10. if it is giving you this much trouble then it is most likely copy protected. first try using mov2avi to convert it and if that doesnt work, there is a way around it.

STEP 1: open your favorite sound recorder (for example Microsoft Sound Recorder, GoldWave, SoundForge etc.), i HIGHLY suggest using GoldWave or SoundForge. then open up your .mov file in quicktime.

STEP 2: make sure your recording properties are set correctly. if you double click on the little speaker icon in the system tray (near the clock) and click on Options...Properties a window will come up. Click Recording under Adjust Volume For and click OK. back in volume control there will be various devices to select such as Microphone and Line In. If there is an option called "What U Hear" click select and hit OK. If there isnt anything that says that play around with the different options until this next step works.

STEP 3: go into your recording program and start recording. then go back to quicktime and play your mov file. when it is done playing, stop your record.

STEP 4: if you used sound forge or GoldWave then this will be easier. in soundforge or goldwave, select everything before when the video clip started playing. if there was silence for a while in the start of the clip you will have to find out how long that silence is and make sure you save that length of silence in the begining. after you have selected the part where you started recording earlier than the clip was playing, hit the delete key on the keyboard. save this file as a new file somewhere where you will remember it.

if you used microsoft sound recorder, go to exactly the place where you want the audio to start and click Edit...Delete Before Current Position then save the file to someplace where you will remember it.

STEP 5: ok, now in TMPEGENC set your video source as the .mov file and your audio source as the wav file you just created. then make your mpeg.

    enjoy.
