What exactly is the final "scoop" on these two models? I don't need bells or whistles. I just need something to record to.....then take it to my computer to make a REAL DVD.
I've got a Philips 985 now. Am I going to be able to use the same basic procedures I use now? Is there anything drastically different in the way these create DVD's VS. the older Philps models like my 985? Same files and folders?.....same AC3 audio?....you know....No Surprises?

lordsmurf has both of these units and prefers the JVC. The JVC has their own pre-encoding enhancement and noise filtering circuits that really do a great job and are not in the LiteOn models. I have a Panasonic E50 and the JVC DR-M10 and the JVC produces a better looking, less noisy MPEG2 recording. I haven't encountered a single problem recording to DVD-RW in standard DVD-Video format and trimming/authoring the final DVD-R on the computer. Audio is AC3. All my finished DVD-R's have worked fine in every player I've tried so far (can't say that about the Panasonic recordings/DVD-R's I've made).
I "tried" to read a thread on dvdplusrw.org when the Liteon first came out but there were SO many people crying and whining about firmware updates I lost interest REAL fast. I'm not big on firmware updates unless it drastically changes something for the better.
There is a big price jump between the two though (at least with the 5001 anyway) and I'm not sure about going from + to - as far as recorders goes....plus( no pun intended) I am so used to +RW's......and I have so many of them...:):):)
I actually own more -R's than +R's - always have since my burner came along.
Think I'm gonna go for the 5001 for now from Currys (£150) & go for something far better early next year.
My primary reason for getting one is to move my very large collection of vhs tapes to disc. Can then put them onto pc & create better dvd's as hech54 wants to above.
Just dont want to spent a lot as I'm only wanting to archive old tapes for now & get a decent model later on. Not too bothered it the 5001 will only last several months as long as it does what I want. Besides if by luck the 5001 breaks down several months down the road, I can take it back to Currys, hoping they have then done away with the 5001 alltogether so they cant replace it & be forced to give me a refund or let me upgrade to a better model minus the £150 I'd have payed for this one :) .
Think I'm right is assuming within the 12 months warrenty I can get a refund or an upgrade without having to wait months for a possable repair?. What I'm trying to say is are we right within our consumer rights to demand a refund if an electrical product breaks down rather than have it repaired if that repair would take more than a fre weeks?.

A lots of people here are LiteOn 5001 "graduates", myself included. The JVC is well worth the $100 price difference, IMHO. LiteOn is not a bad machine. It is a very simple machine with good picture quality. However there are a lots of bugs in the firmware. Most of them are minor and easy to get around. But from time to time, you will get frustrated. The biggest advantage of LiteOn is regional code and macrovision hackable. But since I do not do DVD backup using the LiteOn, it is not that a big deal to me. LiteOn also got a standard 411 writer inside. I used it to do Kprobe and as a 2nd burner. JVC writer do not have a standard IDE interface.
LiteOn audio is not AC3. It is mpeg1 layer 2. But it will play back fine in most of the players. TMPG DVD Author, NeoDVD and Moviefactory can process the files without any problems.
Both produce Video_TS folder. However the Video_TS folder produced by JVC is more DVD-video compliant. The LiteOn Video_Ts is in DVD+VR format. The .ifo files and .bup files are different (Strange!?). Nero would not accept them. However again you can get around by making a backup copy of each .ifo and rename them .bup, then Nero will accept it.
The biggest problem for 5001 is without a fan. I have to open the cover to record, othrwise it is getting too hot. If you really want 5001 for its price, make sure to get a clone with a fan like Gateway AR230, Akai DVDRW120 ($199 at Amazon + $50 gift certificate for $250) or Daytek DVR-P30.
A great post. After hearing all the pros and cons about the LiteOn the JVC is a much smarter deal. Also compliancy is very important to me. Stick to the standards AC3, LPCM are the acceptable standards for dvd audio.
Mpeg audio will play fine in most players. I've found that life is funny and the one time you really need to play something is the time it won't play because the player can't read the file.
This happened to me using my Pana E50, due to the unusual way that this machine authors some players exibit problems playing the disks properly. I sent a disk to Trinidad to some friends to play, and I didn't author it using my computer I used the Pana E50. The disk would not play. I sent another copy, only this time I used my computer to author it and it played with no problem.
That was one of the reasons I went searching for a new dvd recorder, sometimes I don't want to author using my computer. The JVC disks are fully dvd compliant and plays in every player I've tried so far. My Pana disks only play in about half of the players correctly. :wink2:

There is quite a bit of handy info there BUT....that speaks mostly of playback issues. Sure it mentions lousy recording as well but as lousy as a Philips DVD Recorder? I'll stack my Philips 985 up against any DVD Recorder as far as recorded DVD compatibility. I have NEVER had anyone tell me that a DVD created in my Philips 985 would not play in their DVD player.Quote:

I think they are same .vob compatible files. Only .ifo are not compatible amongst the recorders. DVD shrink cannot read them. DVD Decrypter can rip it though.
The Philips shows a VIDEO_RM and a VIDEO_TS folder in Windows. It only uses VR mode on +RW discs BUT the discs shows up as PHILIPS_DVD_VR once it hits the computer drive....though it's really not if it is a finalized +R.

DVDShrink reads my Philips discs. That was an added feature of DVDShrink about 2 versions ago. I now have 3.1.7.6 which I think is the latest.Quote:

On the contrary my arguementative friend. I have all but ruled out the Liteon models since they dont record in AC3. MY point was that the website you directed me to was referring mostly to PLAYBACK issues NOT recording issues. I personally don't give a rats a§§ if a DVD Recorder plays DVDs well...I buy a DVD Recorder to RECORD.
THEN this website claims that Philips recorders are crappy...I have a Philips recorder and though their reliability leaves MUCH to be desired....when they are working properly they are EXELLENT DVD Recorders.
That shows how narrow mined you are that wasn't the only issue. I was only making a point about the non compatibility issue with the LiteOn and AC3. I could give a rats ass about your Philips, that wasn't what the thread you created was questioning, it was the JVC and LiteOn. LiteOn also got a Video_RM and Video_TS folders. I believe if there is a Video_RM folder then it is in DVD+VR format. The finalizing effect may be different. So Philips finalized Video_TS folder may be more DVD-Video compliant according to your experience.Quote:

When my DVDR75 has firmware ff13k, it had PHILIPS_DVD_VR as disc title and VIDEO_RM showed in Windows. Since I had 7 DVD+R coasters with it and I upgraded to firmware ff16f, it solved the DVD_R burning issue with DVDR75, but the default disc name is now DVD_VR and the VIDEO_RM no longer exist in Windows. I have the latest DVD shrink version since the firmware upgrade early June. The only problem with the .ifo file is when you record DVD+RW disc with more than 2 stop and go recordings and when you divide the titles into many titles NON SEQUENTIALLY, i.e. going back and forth on dividing titles on hte disc. Yours 985 may have different mileage and firmware.Quote:
