Hi everyone,

I am looking for some technical advice regarding a Sony Video8 VCR (PAL model EV-A300EC) I recently retrieved it from storage to digitize my old family tapes, but it is currently stuck in a continuous mechanical loading loop :(.

Fault sequence:
1. The VCR was stored in a closet for several years (with a tape left inside).
2. Upon initial power-up, it wouldn't go into PLAY. Unplugging and re-plugging the power made it boot up correctly and execute PLAY.
3. I inserted a tape; it read it and went into PLAY without issues.
4. I pressed STOP and unplugged the power to move it closer to the TV.
5. As soon as I plugged it back in, the VCR ejected the tape, and from that moment it entered a continuous loop:
- As soon as power is applied (or POWER is pressed), an automatic sequence of mechanical movements starts.
- During the first phase of the sequence, if I push the door to close it without a tape, it stays closed temporarily.
- A second automatic mechanical sequence starts, which re-opens the door and ejects.
- At this point, if I try to close it manually when no tape is inside, it does not lock/catch unless I insert a tape so the door manages to close, but it feels unnatural and forced, as if something gets jammed. In this case, even as the mechanical cycles run, it will not open automatically and I have to manually pry the internal door lever to eject the tape.)
- Unplugging and re-plugging power (or pressing POWER) repeats the exact same cycle.

Attachments:
I have two short videos showing the exact mechanical movement sequence of the carriage upon power-up.

Hypothesis:
I suspect it could be a dirty/misaligned mode switch that fails to detect the end-stop position, a loose loading belt that fails to complete the movement, or failing electrolytic capacitors in the power supply or logic control circuits.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue on this Sony mechanism and can point me where to start checking?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hello everyone,

I just joined the forum because I've started using a Hi8 camcorder again. It's a Sony CCD-TRV65. Unfortunately right now I'm traveling for work so I don't actually have access to it but I have a day off and I'm trying to gather data for setting up some sort of capture workflow when I get home in a few weeks.

Anyway, my camcorder records and plays back just fine. Looking at the LCD screen on the camcorder, what I see on playback is completely acceptable. If I could record the exact same pixels I see on the LCD and save it to my computer, I would be fine. I guess that seems obvious but what I mean is I don't need any video enhancement or reconstruction.

I have a composite USB capture card lying around somewhere, and I'm pretty sure what the opinion of most people on this forum would be about that device. I'd like something better than that.

The other day I tested playback from my camcorder to a CRT TV using a composite video cable. The video quality was still acceptable to me, but there was significant vertical jittering and from what I could find out, it seems like the TBC isn't enabled when playing back through composite. I can't find much more info on this. The video looks fine without jitter in the LCD on the camcorder, but not when it's outputting to another display, which makes me worried because when I capture the video it would also look shaky.

Does anyone know if there's a way to enable TBC on the composite output of these Sony Hi8 camcorders? If not, does the TBC at least work when using the S-Video output?

If I can get the internal TBC to work when outputting video from any port, I'd be happy. If not, it means I would have to go down another rabbit hole which I'd rather avoid. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

In the process of making a WinDV-style capture app (with many more features, and completely written from scratch), we need some sample clips from a D-VHS deck.
(see: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/421070-Modern-WinDV-style-app-coming-soon)

We need these, although mainly #3:

1. D-VHS HD tape — ideally the D-Theater demo tape, around 25 Mb/s.

2. Analog tape played in the D-VHS deck — S-VHS or VHS, producing the deck’s roughly 12.4 Mb/s digital output

3. ATSC broadcast recording played from D-VHS tape — roughly 19 Mb/s. Requires a deck with a built-in ATSC tuner or a recording made through a compatible FireWire tuner.

Captured directly from FireWire, with no FFmpeg processing, remuxing, or re-encoding.

If you can upload such files, it'll be much appreciated. Please also include the deck's model number, i.e. HM-DH30000, etc.

I've found at least one tape like this, and it chops between them pretty fast and frequently. Sometimes there's just one second of interlaced, then a second of progressive, then a second of interlaced...

At other times it's mostly progressive.

I am thinking that progressive was used for certain types of shots (close up and mid) and that interlaced was used for wide shots.

I can't enter timings for every transition in AVS, so I feel my options are:

1. do not de-interlace to retain best quality for 90% of the time
2. interlace everything so that nothing looks comb-like...

Is there any other/clever tactic or tool?

Thanks!

Been trying to solve this on my own, however I need to purchase the best option first, NOT after 3-4 tries like usual.

I'm burning DVDs with GREAT success thanks to input from the experts on this Forum, MANY THANKS !

My system uses a JVC SR-MV30 VCR outputting to A Sony VRD-MC5 DVD burner. The Sony has a SMALL screen to monitor the image. The JVC VCR only has 1 output for RCA/S-video cables. It does also have an RF style output. It seems to me that I could also output a video only signal from that to an ACER computer monitor (DVI-D and VGA inputs) so I could watch the VCR and be able to start the Sony burner recording at a more precise point on the VHS tape.

Can anyone here give a recommendation as to what I need to connect, and if possible actual manufacturer names and part #s ???

Thanks Again !
