It isn't something that will correct using tracking or TCB.
I cleaned the heads of my VCR using my Head Cleaning Tape, but may do a deeper cleaning opening it up, but was curious if anyone recognizes this issue.

I'm playing VHS-C tapes with a JVC adapter C-P6U in two VCRs:

So far I haven't had any issues but last weekend, when i play any VHS-C tape on JVC VCR i get noise bars and the audio is ok.
I play the same VHS-C tapes on LG VCR without issues, so i presume the adapter is ok.
Regular VHS tapes are playing well in both VCRs, so i presume the video heads in JVC VCR are ok.

What could be happening ?
I already play around wih manual tracking in JVC VCR without success.
Unfortunately, I have some SVHS-C tapes that I can only play on JVC VCR.

Please help.

Thanks

has anyone here tried using ffmpeg to record their hdmi capture cards? i've been dabbling with it, but i'm having major issues with it. i wanted to ditch obs because of the duplicate frame issue but i can't seem to avoid it now.

i'm getting duplicate frames in my capture despite having vsync set to 0 and fps_mode set to passthrough (the dupes aren't being reported in ffmpeg), i keep getting "non monotonus dts" warnings during capture, and i am also getting corrupted frames when importing the captured video into davinci resolve. the duplicate frames is what's causing the glitching.

[Attachment 91257 - Click to enlarge]

is there a fix for this? my computer is more than capable of capturing in real time.

the reason why I'm using ffmpeg is because I cannot record 4k60 4:4:4 with OBS without massive duplicate frames and encoder overload even though my computer should be more than capable of doing so. OBS gives me duplicate frames regardless of settings though, it's a longstanding issue with capture cards.

vsync=1 and fps_mode cfr reports duplicate frames. fps_mode cfr gives me drops and dupes. I'm getting them every few seconds, sometimes every few minutes, and sometimes its several frames at a time. I know it's not noticeable by most people, but I'm sensitive to them and my pc should be more than capable of capturing with zero duplicate frames.

here's my command:

Code:

ffmpeg -hide_banner -rtbufsize 2G -f dshow -video_size 2560x1440 -framerate 59.9402 -pix_fmt bgr24 -video_pin_name 0 -audio_pin_name 2 -vsync 0 -fflags +genpts -i video="AVerMedia HD Capture GC573 1":audio="AVerMedia HD Capture GC573 1" -colorspace:v "bt709" -color_primaries:v "bt709" -color_trc:v "bt709" -color_range:v "tv" -c:v hevc_nvenc -pix_fmt yuv444p -gpu any -g 30 -rc vbr -cq 16 -qmin 16 -qmax 16 -b:v 0K -b_ref_mode 1 -spatial_aq 1 -temporal_aq 1 -aq-strength 15 -sc_threshold 40 -bf 2 -b_ref_mode each -i_qfactor 0.75 -b_qfactor 1.1 -refs 3 -keyint_min 25 -qcomp 0.6 -qblur 0.5 -surfaces 64 -preset p1 -profile rext -c:a copy -f segment -segment_time 9999999999 -strftime 1 -metadata DEVICE="AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K" -metadata:s:v:0 title="Game Video [AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K]" -metadata:s:a:0 title="Game Audio [AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K]" -metadata:s:a:1 title="Mic Audio" "F:\ffmpeg recordings\%%Y-%%m-%%d_%%H-%%M-%%S.mkv"

specs:
GPU - Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB
RAM - G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 64GB DDR4 3600MHz
Capture Card - Avermedia Live Gamer 4K (GC573)

i asked about this on another site. someone recommended me use either ddagrab or gfxcapture because "dshow is ancient". those are basically just screen recorders. i'm screen recording a preview. that's not practical for me, i want to record in the resolution and framerate my console is outputting.

Hello,

I want to capture some of my old vhs I captured some good lossless avis back in the past if I rememver correct just need some feedback on what to choose.

This is my current setup :
Blaupunkt Rtv 966 > svhs cable > Panasonic DMR-Eh575 > svhs Cable > Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle > Windows 11 Machine using Virtual dub 1.9.11

First Question :
I want to capture standard pal vhs tapes which video output would be the best to select in my Blackmagic intensity software?

Second question :
I can't install huffyuv for the life of me tried everything with no luck so far.
I read that either lagarith or utvideo would be equal if not supperior to huffyuv using modern machines.
Which codec would you suggest to use for my project?
If utvideo which one?

Third question :
If I remember correct I had some filter packages for vdub installed to improve the picture and audio quality.
Is this a good idea if yes what kind of filters would you suggest?

Hi all,

I have just started the journey of converting VHS tapes to digital. I understand the limits of how good these tapes are going to look when converted, but I would still like to get the best results possible, so I thought I would start with trying to capture an uncompressed file. I have not yet purchased capture cards or software, but I do have two VCRs (JVC VP58U and Sharp VC-H996). I realize that neither of these are S-VHS, but they are almost brand new (I have owned them for their entire life) and the tapes play in them without any jumpiness, and except for a few tapes that are 40 years old, without noise.

I would love recommendations for the best setup for a lossless capture (e.g. ProRes since I am a mac user). My plan is to throw the files in Adobe Premiere and edit/put clips together. I am not concerned about file size being too big since I have 2.5 TB of space.

I would appreciate any insights you all have.

Thanks,
Robin

I have made a small capture with the sharpness at 128 (middle ground) and instead of being neither sharpening or softening the image, I felt like it added too much sharpness to it. To add extra confusion, the default is 16 (out of 256).

Has anyone examined these settings to see if there's an optimum to make them as raw as possible?

I'm working on digitising hi8 tapes. I was using the original Canon camcorder the tapes were shot on to record via s-video into virtualdub2/amarectv via a gv2usb capture card, however both were giving me audio drift issues that I couldn't reliably solve. I do have a ViewCast Osprey 260e PCI-E Analog Video card on the way which I was going to replace the gv2usb with, but I later discovered you can capture hi8 tapes via firewire from a backwards compatible digital8 Sony camcorder, which would reliably keep the audio in sync.

I am using the Sony TRV355e Digital8 Camcorder and my mid 2012 macbook pro with it's inbuilt firewire port for capture. Sadly, all of my footage has a transparent green line on the right side of the frame. See this image here. I have tried multiple capture software, and all have the same issue. After searching online, I found multiple posts on this exact issue show this exact artifact. The only solution offered has been to crop the green line out. This means losing part of the footage underneath, which is captured properly via s-video. I don't want to lose this part of the image.

All of the posts I have seen focus on solving the users problem with their particular set up, but instead I am asking whether there is any solution at all possible to record hi8 via FireWire without this issue - whether that be with a different camcorder, or a different kind of dv capture device.

Ultimately this is to get a reliable method for audio syncing, so if this FireWire set up is not possible, then is there a method or setup to get reliable sudio audio sync during the initial capture of hi8 tapes, and for that matter, any other kind of tape, without needing to fix it in post?

I do also have a Panasonic DMR-ES15 on the way which I was planning to use with my S-VHS player - I don't know if that would help at all in capturing hi8 via s-video into say, the superior Viewcast I will have soon.

Thanks!
