Hiss/Noise Removal

I have a similar issue as that for meeshu's post regarding removal of hiss/noise from the audio track of a video.

Although I don't own Izotope, I have access to it for audio editing.

Using Izotope I've tried to remove the hiss/noise by using Deconstruct, and later tried using Spectral De-Noise.

First, tried setting to high noise dB removal for one pass in rendering, then tried setting to low noise dB removal for multiple passes in rendering.

But the results are usually about the same. The noise is considerably removed, but there are artifacts caused after the rendering which distorts the wanted remaining audio (music and effects). The distortion sounds like bubbling or a watery type of sound, and although not too bad it is noticeable.

The sample has wanted background music and some effects as well as the noise.

How to remove this noise without causing any distortion of the wanted sound (music and effects)?

Removing Hiss

Attempting to remove hiss from audio track off a video.

I'm aware that one (and maybe the best) technique is to 'learn' hiss on a section of audio which ONLY has hiss and no other sound using an audio editor. This 'learning' creates a mask which is then applied to other parts of the audio which contains hiss and other sounds (voice, music, effects). The mask then effectively removes the hiss leaving only the wanted sounds such as voice, music and effects.

However, in my case here, there is no section of audio which contains the hiss ONLY to 'learn' as a mask. So using the mask technique is not really an option here.

So, how to remove hiss only from audio that also has other (wanted) sounds?

Sample audio enclosed. The clip has music and some effects as well as the hiss. Want to remove the hiss only from the sample clip.

How can I save the play list so I won't have to reenter the songs every tim

To save the list, simply open Winamp and then go to the bottom-left section with the Add, Rem, Sel, and Misc buttons. Next is Manage Playlists. Click the button and select Save Playlist. Choose a location and that's it. To enable Repeat after the playlist is finished, click the Repeat button until is says: Repeat: All.

I would like to submit a free utility I developed.

Audio Fake Detector PRO is a lightweight tool I created to analyze audio files and detect fake MP3 or FLAC files that have been transcoded from lossy sources but falsely appear as high-bitrate or lossless.

It is mainly intended for verifying the authenticity of audio files downloaded from online sharing platforms such as SoundCloud, where files are often mislabeled or re-encoded.

The software uses spectrogram-based analysis along with FFmpeg and auCDtect to identify:

- frequency cutoffs typical of compressed audio
- inconsistencies within different parts of the same file
- possible lossy-to-lossless transcodes
- Classification criteria (FAKE detection logic v5.4)

A file is classified as FAKE in the following cases:

- Bitrate < 170 kbps (pre-filter)
- Lossy formats (MP3/M4A/AAC/OGG/OPUS/WMA) with a hard cutoff ≤ 16.5 kHz
- Lossless formats (FLAC/WAV/APE/AIFF/WV) showing strong MPEG artifacts (auCDtect ≥ 80%)
- Lossless files with abnormal spectrogram cutoff behavior
- Mixed-source encoding or inconsistencies between segments

It is designed for modern digital music collections and large batches of audio files, including long recordings. It may be less accurate on audio with naturally limited frequency range (speech, very old recordings, acoustic material).

The program is free (freeware) portable (uses %LOCALAPPDATA%) and developed by me.

Please help with cue sheet problem

For the last few days I've been going nuts trying to figure out why I can't get this cue sheet to work properly (with Kodi) when I've created them many times before. It's a custom compilation of DTS tracks from the McCartney DVD's Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and the McCartney Years. It's ALMOST is correct, except that the album title shows up as "SINGLES" and after track 1, the next is also numbered track 1 which is file itself (Paul McCartney & Wings (DTS 5.1 Mix) before continuing to track 2 and so on. The only issue I can think of is the tacks from Band on the Run /Venus & Mars are dts 1510 kb/s 96/24 while the rest are dts 755 kb/s 48/24. I combined them into one single track and included snapshots to better show what I'm trying to explain. Thanks, help is greatly appreciated.

SurroundUpmix - Free Stereo to 5.1 / 7.1 Surround Upmixer (PowerShell)

I tried to create a surround upmix workflow that actually makes sense - one that uses AI stem separation to produce a proper surround mix rather than just spreading the stereo image wider.

Most upmix tools work by duplicating or phase-shifting the stereo signal. The result sounds okay on paper but all the instruments end up bleeding into every speaker. This approach is different. It uses Demucs-GUI - a free AI tool - to split the audio into its individual components first (bass, drums, vocals, instruments), and then places each one where it belongs in the surround field.

The result is a genuine multichannel mix where vocals sit in the center channel, bass and drums fill the front, and ambient and harmonic content spreads to the rear and sides. The subwoofer channel is derived from the real low-frequency content of the full mix.

The whole thing runs locally on your machine with free tools and produces a 24-bit FLAC file in either 5.1 or 7.1 that you can mux into an MKV or use directly in any media player that supports multichannel audio.

What it does

You run Demucs-GUI on your stereo audio - it uses AI to separate the track into 4 stems: bass, drums, vocals, other
You point SurroundUpmix at the stems folder
The script processes the stems through a 3-stage phase analysis (using CenterCutCL) to identify center vs. side content in each stem
Each stem gets placed into the correct speakers based on what it contains
A subwoofer (LFE) channel is built from the low frequencies of the full mix
Everything is combined and saved as a 24-bit FLAC

Processing a 46-minute episode takes around 10-15 minutes on a modern machine. No cloud, no subscription, no re-encoding of video.

What You Need (all free)

1. Demucs-GUI - separates your audio into stems using AI

Choose the right version:

cuda_mkl version - for NVIDIA GPU (GTX 700 series or newer) or Intel Arc / Intel Xe GPU - much faster
cpu version - works on any machine, slower

In Demucs-GUI: add your file, select model htdemucs_ft, click Start. Output will be a folder with bass.flac, drums.flac, vocals.flac, other.flac.

2. SoX - Sound eXchange - audio channel processing

3. CenterCutCL - phase-based center/side separation (core of the upmix)

Troubleshooting

"Required binary not found"
A tool is missing from the bin folder. Check the folder structure shown above.

"No stems found"
The folder does not contain bass.flac, drums.flac etc. Make sure Demucs-GUI finished and you are pointing to the correct subfolder.

"execution of scripts is disabled"
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

Use -LoudnessMatch to automatically match the volume to the original.

Quick Start Checklist

Download and install Demucs-GUI
Run Demucs-GUI on your audio file using the htdemucs_ft model
Download SoX and place sox.exe in bin\SoX\
Download CenterCutCL and place CenterCutCL.exe in bin\
Optionally download ffmpeg and place ffmpeg.exe in bin\ffmpeg\
Place SurroundUpmix.ps1 in the SurroundUpmix folder
Open PowerShell in that folder and run the script
Add -OutputFormat 7.1 if you want 7.1 (default is 5.1)

Getting the Script

The script is attached to this post as SurroundUpmix.txt.

Download the attached SurroundUpmix.txt file
Rename it to SurroundUpmix.ps1 (just change the extension from .txt to .ps1)
Place it inside your SurroundUpmix folder next to the bin subfolder

Windows may hide file extensions. If you cannot see the .txt part of the filename:

Open any Explorer window
Click View at the top
Tick File name extensions
Now you can rename the file correctly

Before running - allow PowerShell scripts (one time only):

Press the Windows key, type PowerShell
Right-click it and choose Run as Administrator
Run this command:

Type Y and press Enter. You only need to do this once on your machine.

Then to run it:

Open the SurroundUpmix folder in Explorer
Hold Shift and right-click an empty spot in the folder

embedded image in FLAC?

Hi,

I tried to show an album (one flac + one cue + folder.jpg + back.jpg) in my Silent Angel VitOS Orbiter APP on the smartphone. In the APP only back.jpg is shown. Question: how does the App determine which image shall be shown? How to show folder.jpg instead?

6 Channels, E-AC-3 doesn't open properly on my audio editor

Hi. To make it easier for my Dad to watch a favourite TV show, I download it and then open it with WavePad in order to amplify the volume. The most recent episodes, however, behave oddly: a one hour show appears to be anything up to 3 hours when in WavePad and the playback is a muffled mess. The audio is as per the heading but I can't recall what it was when I was having no problems.
Any idea what the issue is and how to get round it? Many thanks.
