I've got a lot of tapes taken with a Sony Hi8 consumer camcorder during the 1990s. I've digitized all the tapes using a Sony Digital8 camcorder, which digitizes within the camcorder and then outputs DV format video via a FireWire/1394 port. However, on some tapes, certain colors tend to have low saturation (especially greens in certain types of background foliage, though other greens are often OK) and/or color shifting (blue skies can take on a purplish hue). I suspect this is due to the age of the tapes.

Anyone have experience with whether a professional transfer service can do a better job extracting high-quality video from Hi8 tapes than Sony's own Digital8 camcorders do? There's a shop within reasonable driving distance that has the equipment to perform the conversion, but they won't do a test of a small amount of video, only entire tapes. I'd like to solicit opinions from folks with experience before I spend the money, potentially only to find out their conversion's no better than what I've already done.

Thanks in advance for any experience you can share.

I have been using Canopus ADVC-300 to digitize many old VHS tapes with my older iMac, and it has worked well. However, my iMac is very slow, and I decided to upgrade to a newer iMac (2021) and tried the very same connection method to Final Cut Pro X, but the "media" doesn't show Canopus anymore. I tried several things, but it still didn't work. Anyone out there can help? (See attachment for the streamline map that was recommended, but it didn't work.) Thank you so much!

Hello. I’m sure this has been discussed before, and I noticed some threads here. But, none seem to be recent (within the past year or so).

I have a VidBox, and as far as I know, I have the latest software for it. I’m running this with a 2020 MBP (dual-core 2GHz i5s, 16GB pf RAM).

Over the past year and a half to two years, I notice periodic / occasional "hiccups" in the playback. Basically, the audio continues along unaffected, but for a second or so, the video will actually stop. One second later, it will resume, but not where it left off (which is good because then it would be out of sync with the audio), but rather the video resumes about where it would have been had it never been interrupted. (I can upload a file that demonstrates this problem, if anyone needs to see it.)

The VidBox is connected to a TB3 port, via a TB3 / USB adaptor (type A USB? whichever is the wide, rectangular species of USB).

My question is: Is there a way to get a better result using my set-up, or do I need to purchase something new? Bear in mind a new laptop is not realistic at this time. But, I am open to hearing digitizer options -- unless, again, there's a way to make the VidBox perform better.

Thank you!

Hi,

This is my first time trying to do VHS capture, so please bear with me if I've overlooked something. I'm trying to digitize some rare and out of print folk music recordings for personal use, for some friends and others of interest. I have some modern video editing experience (DaVinci Resolve), but this type of work is all new.

I initially did a capture with VirtualDub2, but ran into audio issues, so I tried VirtualDub 1.9 where I was able to capture, but was still experience audio sync drift that was not consistent throughout the video. I then tried AmaRec which captured with no sync issues. I've been running all captures through StaxRip for QTGMC deinterlacing, scaling etc, but I verified that the saturation/contrast difference is present in the raw captures as shown in the pic.

Both sets of software had contrast and saturation at 128 with all other settings at 0.

Any ideas?

I use it to set up the proc amp before capturing, in cases where content clips on the default settings. It's worked fine in the past, but I've been away from it for a couple of years and now can't get it to open. In AvsPmod I get a black screen with the two scopes, in MPC-HC I get a “cannot render the file” message in the status bar. I am using a different computer, so it's possible I'm missing a plugin or something that I need, but I'm not sure what it could be.

Hello! I'm facing some issues regarding this device.
It can't save any video on the memory card. I've deleted and reseted its settings, but when I put some reel to capture, it always says "sorry, no video found". I've plugged the device to my PC and it doesn't show nothing recorded. It's frustrating, 'cause I've imported and I'm seeing any place that can help me on this.
My memory card is 16Gb.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I just unpacked my old ADVC-100 and connected it to my Windows 10 PC that has a built-in Firewire connection. I've used this combo numerous times in the past to digitize old family VHS tapes. However when I tried again today, Scenalyzer (nor any other software) did not recognize or display a video stream. The analog light on the ADVC-100 is lit up and Scenalyzer shows the device as "AV/C Tape Recorder/Player".

If memory serves, I believe that box used to show "Microsoft DV Camera" or similar, but now I don't see that as an option. The dip switches are all in the Off position as I'm using analog inputs exclusively. I've tried using the front and rear firewire connections connected to both firewire jacks on PC without any luck.

I liked the ADVC-100 because it automatically synced audio and video.

Can anyone help me out with this problem?
