My software automatically decrypts the dvd's and lists all titles on the disc. This is usually a lot more than the main episodes, and includes trailers, ads, etc.

I usually just select all of the actual episodes for ripping based upon the length (usually around 30-45 mins) and let it go. It conveniently names them Showname_Disc#_Title#, and often they're all correct and so I simply use Bulk Renamer to correct up the name to "Show S01E01" and so on and then Plex does the rest.

The issue (my question) is that sometimes things are not in the correct order or there are other episodes within the discs that throw everything off. For example, the three Chicago series (Fire, Med & PD) have several crossover episodes which are included within the other shows dvd's, so a season of Chicago PD will include some episodes from both Med and Fire, and also they will occasionally even throw in a few Law & Order episodes too when they help out. Sometimes these other episodes are bonuses at the end, and other times they're thrown right in with the rest in their respective locations within the main epsides.

Is there an easy and fool-proof way to quickly check every episode and verify which it is so I can make sure to get them all correctly named? I've tried using imdb and thetvdb, but they simply give me the episode titles, and unlike STTNG that very conveniently displayed the name of every episode directly proceeding the intro, modern episodes do not. I've even tried using the cast to try to identify new actors specific to each episode, but that is difficult and time consuming.

Has anyone come up with a clever solution or is there perhaps some tool or database out there already that I can use?

I have many old SD DVDs that I compressed with Handbrake many years ago. I am re-ripping all of them since I now have newer A/V equipment that can upscale and take advantage of audio tracks that were not included back when i first did this. Also drive space is not a big issue as it was when I first ripped them, so I am not looking to compress them. These are all titles that I find to be fine watching in their current format and which I don't need to upgrade to BluRay or 4K.

I am ripping using MakeMKV and normally I would keep them just as they are as I do for my BluRay and 4K rips, but a lot of the titles I am ripping are interlaced. I am using a Plex server and using the Plex app on the Nvidia Shield pro to play them on my LG C5 OLED. I believe these need to be de-interlaced so that the Nvidia shield pro can upscale them, so I am looking for the simplest method to do this. I want to keep the best possible video quality during this process, and of course leave the audio track intact. I can sacrifice some drive space for quality, so I don't mind if the resulting MKV file is larger than the original, as long as it is within reason. Same with the time it will take for the encoding. I don't mind waiting a little longer if it means better quality. I'm basically looking for that sweet spot.

Can anyone recommend the best utility to do this and the proper settings when using this utility? I have Handbrake and Shutter Encoder already installed, but I am not sure these are the best tools or what settings I should be using if they are. I have a Windows 10 PC and if I there is a better program/utility to do this, please let me know. Something that is free or inexpensive would be desireable as I only have so many DVDs that I need to rip.

I used to have a lot more knowledge of this process back when I first created the video files, but like I said that was years ago and I think a lot of those brain cells have passed on. So please treat me like a rookie.

I have just updated the handbrake to latest and added in LIBDVDCSS to the folder. The dvd is from 2021.
It likely has shorter files for things like titling and subtitles and such. I thought that LIBDVDCSS solves for that. And I did the NET framework required routine.

Any advice appreciated.

Might a program like makeMKV work instead? I'm hoping to get this done in a program I'm used to using and that's
Handbrake itself. I've had problems with makeMKV running "hot" on the CPU.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Complete 2nd Season (Disc 3), and SpongeBob SquarePants: Christmas
Both are Region 1, NTSC DVDs

One issue with the "Season 2" DVD is that most of the episodes have incorrect color composition. For Example, in the episode "Procrastination", on the "Christmas" DVD, SpongeBob looks normal. On the "Season 2" DVD, SpongeBob looks rather pale and doesn't accurately depict how it was originally aired, unlike the "Christmas" DVD.

Another issue here, which I would like to talk about, is the encoding.
I am going to use "Avidemux" and the raw VOB files from the discs to demonstrate this scenario.
All of the frames on the "Season 2" DVD are marked as "TFF" or "Top Field First", which is to be expected from a DVD source.
However, on "Christmas" DVD, some frames are "TFF", most frames are "FRM" which is just a progressive frame, which doesn't seem normal to me.
Not only that, but the playback on the "Christmas" DVD is choppy compared to the "Season 2" DVD, whereas it is rather consistent.

I would rather preserve copies with the correct color composition so I could deinterlace them myself, but I can't work with such wonky scenarios. I will leave some images below so you guys can take a look at this phenomenon. If you can, please let me know what is going on, why is this happening, what can I do to counteract this, etc.? If you guys need me to upload anything else helpful, please let me know. Thanks!
