Surprised to see VideoSubFinder so highly rated. I was recommended this by a friend to extract hardcoded subtitles together with Subtitle Edit doing the OCR of the extracted images.
Not only the UI is super ugly and confusing, it fails too much at recognizing the subtitles, sometimes only grabbing garbage. Even the corrected captured subtitles were so poor (image quality) that Subtitle Edit could not OCR them. Also Subtitle Edit to blame cause it is using the old Tesseract engine.

This is all old tech now, for this purpose.

I then discovered 2 programs: VidSubX and VideOCR. By the way, surprised that they have not yet a VideoHelp page. (I just submitted them, let's see what happens).
They are very similar and super easy to use. Just open the video, select the region where the subtitles appear and start. It automatically creates a srt file with no need for a second tool. They have 2 versions: CPU and GPU. I used only the GPU version since it is more powerful. They both use PaddleOCR.

VidSubX took 20 minutes for a 95m movie. It completely nailed it. Even captured some credits that appeared in the subtitles region.
VideOCR took 11 minutes for the same movie. I really don't know how to use regex but I experimented with what I found online but could not get it to work reliably. The problem is I need it to ignore apostrophes in the text string like contractions and only see apostrophes at the beginning and end of a line and also work correctly when there is a line break in the text string and I cannot get it to do either and mine only works with the first string between apostrophes then moves on.

I'm using Subtitle Edit and the regular expression selection in the Replace function.

Could anyone please tell me why my SCC is shown as being 23.976 in Subtitle Edit (on Windows), but both Media Info and Premiere consider it to be 29 fps? I had originally converted it from an SRT and subsequently fine tuned it in Subtitle Edit, synching it with my 23.976 video in that app, and all seemed fine but when I tried it out in Premiere it played out of sync (drift).

I tried changing Premiere's Indeterminate Media Timebase setting to 23.976 but it still lags a few seconds towards the end of the movie. Please help me to understand why this is happening and especially, how I can be certain it won't happen in other streaming platforms.

The hard subs may often be in some foreign language, and are obtrusive, just in the way. Usually when I've run into a video file that has these, I just tossed it, and went off in search of some alternate source / copy that did not have hard subs -- if such existed. But sometimes there is no recourse.

From what little I recall, a direct fix would have to involve masking over the hard subs, so that replacement soft subs (SRT) could then be overlaid on top of the mask area. This has been well beyond my level of skills. Complications would include the varying size, style, and placement of the hard subs; what color and qualities for the mask ?; and that this "fix" could easily start to detract and distract from the video content itself, particularly towards bottom of frame, and therefore harm the video's viewability. (But you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, as they say.) And it's not going to be a "one size fits all" kind of solution, so it would have to be adjustable.

I work with SRTs all the time, and am fairly comfortable with that. Still need to get more adept with sync timing issues though.

So, my question is: has anyone authored a good guide on this subject ? One that you don't have to be a rather advanced user to follow and make use of ? I think it is apt to be more unlikely that someone has created any scripts to address and automate the process, which can then be plugged into some program and run ?
