I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on.

It started out as just a simple way for me to handle FFmpeg conversions, but over the last 6 months, it’s evolved into a much bigger video editing platform.

I’ve put a ton of time into getting some specific features working that I couldn't find elsewhere, like: Black and White "Filmic" conversions for any footage. Built-in yt-dlp downloading. Proper GoPro and iPhone imports (getting the iPhone import to play nice with Windows 11 was a massive headache compared to Mac, but it’s finally stable).

Since I've put so much of my own time into the development, it is a paid tool, but I’ve tried to make it handle the stuff that usually requires three different apps to get done.

If you’re interested in the "why" behind it or how it works, I’ve put the guides and the philosophy here:

https://ffmpegcommander.com

Build by a Gen-Xer / most of my clients are also in that age group and they better understand what I have build.

Happy to answer any questions if anyone is curious about the tech behind it. Thanks!

This is something I noticed in Sony Vegas: you are ready with the project, do rendering to mp4 format. What I actually do is render the video by Debugmode Frameserver. Load the rendered video in Vegas, the old and the rendered line up perfectly. Every frame matches. Then I render the audio in aac, mux the rendered video and audio. Loading back to Vegas, the rendered audio is shifted compared to the old. If I compensate this shifting the audio before rendering, the new and old lines up perfectly.

Do I need to do this shifting before rendering, or the misalignment is only a glitch in Vegas, and in reality, the audio will play on time even if it appears shifted after rendering? Is there any way to objectively examine the position of the audio in the rendered file after muxing?

I have a short piece of H264 video shot with my phone in UHD 30fps Variable. I have exported it to a 30fps Constant FR AVI for processing.

I started off with the phone virtually stationary, then panned, and then slowed down the pan to stop. What I've found is this:

Slow movements at the start have been interpolated nicely. But as the panning speed increases, the interpolation stops and I get motion every 2nd frame. Then, at the end, as I slow down the pan to almost stopped, the interpolation kicks in again.

Here's my code:

Code:

AVISource("F:\Fete\End pan 30fps.avi")
ConvertToYV16

z_ConvertFormat(pixel_type="RGBPS", colorspace_op="709:709:709:l=>rgb:709:709:f")
Rife(gpu_thread=1, model=71, fps_num=60000, fps_den=1000, uhd=true, sc=true, sc_threshold=0.12)
z_ConvertFormat(pixel_type="YUV420P8", colorspace_op="rgb:709:709:f=>709:709:709:l")

For privacy reasons I can't post the file but if necessary, will try to make another tomorrow to try to simulate this problem file.

I have tried various models but with no luck. I also tried Frame Rate Converter but it was throwing up blended frames.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions you could provide or comments; is this a characteristic of RIFE with UHD?

So I'm trying to upload a 2 minute video from DVD to youtube, but youtube makes the video way too dark, as it doesn't handle the colorspace of my DVD (BT601 + BT470) correctly.

How to properly encode the video with:
a) convert colorspace so that youtube keeps the brightness the same
b) crop the borders
c) upscale to 4K, otherwise youtube uses too low bitrate and the quality suffers a lot
d) deinterlace (bob)

with a single ffmpeg command if possible.
Should be easier to do steps b+c with avisynth though.

1 second clip (remuxed to mkv) for testing: https://file.kiwi/be4011dc#xFN_FfS3qeU-0MhilMSv3g

If I convert to BT709 or BT601 with Handbrake the video brightness is much better after uploaded to youtube, but still a bit darker than the original (e.g. if BT.601 EBU (=PAL) is selected in Handbrake, mediainfo reports: Color primaries : BT.601 PAL Transfer characteristics : BT.709 Matrix coefficients : BT.601).

I also tried with Handbrake colorspace custom format with the following valuers, which gets the correct brightness in youtube:
primaries="bt601-6-525":transfer="bt709":matrix="bt601-6-525"
For the resulting file Mediainfo only reports: Transfer characteristics : BT.709" and omits color primaries and matrix coefficients.
The problem with this custom colorspace is that it doesn't work when upscaling is enabled. For some reason it also shifts the image a few pixels rightwards.

Mediainfo for the original clip (remux from DVD):
Mediainfo:
