Hello. In a VCR Panasonic NV-HD700EG i have a mysterious problem. All work fine and it plays but after 3-15 minutes the drum stops spinning and the table reels stop rotating. The tape stays threaded on the drum. It does not shut down or show any errors on screen. Just sits there. Buttons on the front can be pressed and it shows on the display they are pressed (Stop, FF, RW), but nothing happens. If i turn it off and turn it on again it can be operated for several minutes until it repeats the problem and halts. I recapped the power supply but all capacitor were within tolerance and the output voltages are there. When it stopped playing, i measured all the voltages and they were there. It smells fishy but i don't know were to look. The problem One thing i noticed in the power supply was a resistor 68KΩ (R1103, Page 42 on service manual) that was really hot, almost 100 degrees Celsius (210 Fahrenheit), but the voltages are there when it produces the fault. Any idea where to look at?

Hello. I've been on this website for about 15 years now, and i have a question about TBC's. We see the ones that cost A HELLUVA LOT on ebay, the ones that are made by the brand name DataVideo, and AVTools. Does that mean they are the only option? I have seen quite a few devices on ebay that are called Time Base Correctors that cost a lot less than $1,500. Would they be a good option to digitize videos with, or would the two most famous, and pricey, brands of TBC's be the best option? I would guess they are the best option, as they cost a lot, and that means if someone wants good captures, they need to fork over a ton of money! Does that mean it's the ONLY option? Would one of the $500 TBC's found on ebay be good to capture video with?

I'm currently testing my I-O Data GV-USB2 (hardware ID USB\VID_04BB&PID_0532&REV_0005) to see how it handles flagging and horizontal jitter (waviness) compared to my ATI TV Wonder 600 USB. As part of this, I'm also running a comparison on dropped, duplicated, and inserted frames over a continuous 6-hour tape capture. I'm planning a comparison video between the two devices at @VideoCaptureGuide on YouTube.

Waviness test
For the waviness test, I’m using my most problematic tape: a 40-year-old VHS recorded in SLP mode. I digitized the tape using the following workflows:

Workflow A: Panasonic PV-VS4821-K (S-VHS VCR) -> S-Video -> GV-USB2 -> USB -> Windows 7 with AmarecTV -> HuffYUV

Workflow B: Panasonic PV-VS4821-K (S-VHS VCR) -> S-Video -> ATI 600 USB -> USB -> Windows 7 with AmarecTV -> HuffYUV

The Panasonic VCR does not have a built-in line TBC, so both capture devices are facing a difficult challenge.

Based on the attached sample clips, the GV-USB2 seems to be doing a noticeably better job maintaining geometry with this difficult tape than the ATI 600. While it is an improvement, the raw output is still unacceptable. Taming the timing errors in this capture will ultimately require adding a passthrough device like the Panasonic DMR-ES15.

I have two questions for the VideoHelp community:

Is there any software tool, Avisynth/VapourSynth plugin, or established metric that can quantitatively measure the level of waviness/jitter over the course of the video? I regularly use Python for log and video analysis, but I'm looking for a reliable way to measure horizontal line variance to be as scientific as possible in this comparison.

Apart from handling timing errors and frame drops/inserts, what other specific metrics or visual comparisons would you recommend to properly evaluate these two devices against each other?

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I’ve actually been reading for quite a while and tried to document myself as much as possible before asking for help and advice here.

I’m about to digitize a few dozen PAL VHS tapes containing transfers from 1990s Sony analog camcorder recordings. The VHS tapes were recorded using consumer VCRs of that era.

Here’s the setup I own for that process:

- JVC HR-7960E configured with TBC: ON, B.E.S.T. (calibration for us versions): ON, PICTURE MODE: COPY (EDIT for US versions)
- Hauppauge USB Live2 capture card, model number 122020 (model 1381 is also indicated on a label on the box)
- S-VIDEO connection, with red/white RCA audio into the Hauppauge
- Windows 11 Professional 64-bit
- VirtualDub 1.9.11 (32-bit)
- Huffyuv 2.11 codec (vanilla, no modifications, 32-bit)
- Modern computer with Core i7, 32gb ram ddr4, SSD m2 hard disks

Hauppauge live2 settings:

In Windows Device Manager, the driver shows as version 5.2024.424.42116 dated 25/04/2024, installed via Hauppauge Capture version 42316.
If I instead download only the driver package 36075 (without the Capture or WinTV software), it says no compatible hardware is found for the update, but also reports that my current Live2 (model 122020) is working correctly. I honestly find this a bit confusing on Hauppauge’s part.

[Attachment 91916 - Click to enlarge]

Driver "error" message:

[Attachment 91919 - Click to enlarge]

VirtualDub 1.9.11 settings:

Capturing at 720x576 using Huffyuv 4:2:2 interleaved
If I enable “overlay” or “preview,” I unfortunately can’t see or hear anything , but the capture itself completes successfully and the file is fine. Does anybody experience the same issue?
In the attached image you can see the proc amp settings, which I’ve left at default:

[Attachment 91917 - Click to enlarge]

In addition to the issue related to the overlay/preview that is not working in virtual dub, I can see the audio in general lags behind the video, it is not very clear in clip I attached because it is an action scene but in scenes with speaking it is more clear.

For me, this is my first time doing this however, I’ve looked at capture samples from other users with similar setups, and my results seem very comparable.

On the other hand, I’ve seen much more experienced users perform detailed histogram analysis and adjust proc amp values and other settings accordingly, as well as being able to choose the right capture codecs. That’s something I’m not yet fully capable at doing, but I’d like to learn :)

I’ve also noticed that many people use AmarecTV instead of Virtualdub, and other codecs like Lagarith instead of Huffyuv. I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts on all of this and on my setup and first result! :)

Many thanks!

Attached there is a portion of my first capture test.

Amarec’s internal RGB conversion. As experts frequently warn, this process can clip "illegal" whites and blacks, permanently destroying detail in the highlights and shadows that a pure YUY2 capture in VirtualDub would have preserved.

So what this means is that if you use Amarec, make sure that your video levels are within the 16 to 235 range. Adjust the brightess and contracts on the levels screen to set it perfectly before you capture.

I'm banned from the site so have no way of making enquiries there.

My understanding is that the digitiser/capture card determines the levels, not the program. I also understand that if the captured file is opened in VDub, it is converted to RGB. The file is not captured in RGB by AmaRecTV (or VDub, for that matter).

Of course, the levels should be set within the limits, but the capture program has nothing to do with the values set.

Any thoughts on the veracity/correctness of the quoted claim?

Need to correct myself. Another thread [this one] at another forum has convincingly proved that this is incorrect. In fact, Amarec will produce YUV color space files if you pick a codec that uses YUV. So, that is great news.

Hello, i am planning to buy some equipement and wanted to ask the hobbyists and pros for advice before actually putting money into it.

I am looking to get a PAL Panasonic ag-455 https://archive.org/details/manual_AG455M_SM_PANASONIC_EN/page/n59/mode/2up (i found one available for really cheap and it seem in great shape) to both shoot stuff and backup S-VHS/VHS, im only struggling to find a camera that also have a analog video IN, wich i'd like to find to go from digital to analog for some specific projects. But, i'm thinking, that's probably not especially the best to go that way right? If what i want is giving a handheld shot analog style to a digital made video. And simply doing that with a nice VHS deck would have the same, if not better results. (By better result i mean, im looking to have the cool artifacts that VHS can create like chromatic aberation and slight grain and lines glitching, i prefer to specify bc its not usually a good thing in restoration)
If you have any feedback and advice as to that part let me know, especially if u know how to create chromatic aberation and control it without damaging the camera/vhs deck, i'd be curious to know.

On that note, let's say i have digital media i want to apply those "effects" to, would it be better to burn a dvd, feed it to the dvd recorder and output with analog to the VHS deck to record? Or, get an actual card for my pc that have an analog out directly to the VHS deck? (that card would need to operate on win 10 or 11, and idk if the usb capture cards can do that, can they?)

As to going to digital from analog, i have been looking at other posts and figured out that i might want to either have the VHS in the camera and outputing with analog or using a VHS deck also outputing in analog into a dvd recorder like the Panasonic ES15 (wich i think i have one similar somewhere) to benefit from the Line TBC passthrough. But from there, would it be better to just record on a dvd and use the dvd on my pc or pluging the signal into a capture device?

For a possible capture device i'm looking at a second hand AVERMEDIA Game Capture HD: https://www.amazon.fr/AVERMEDIA-Capture-Bo%C3%AEtier-dacquisition-%C3%A9l%C3%A9ments/dp/B005YR0M0W Mostly because i found one available for cheap and it records to a HDD then u can simply copy paste the file to the PC, and dont need to run software on win 11 and have a mess of cables and devices near the PC. (convenient)
But tbh, i dont know which resolution i should aim for, nor if outdated equipempent is passable or if recent stuff perform just better in every way, and i dont know how that device will do, if you know, any feedback on that would be very appreciated. And if u have another device to recommend that's not going 100$ let me know.

Thank you in advance for your advices, this whole process is pretty daunting when u first get into it and i'm eager to see how i could improve the process before commiting with money.

I am working with a company to transfer a collection of U-Matic tapes from the 1980s. Some of these tapes I captured myself before my deck died, but I decided to send them to a company for re-capture because I was not using a TBC and did not have the ability to bake tapes. All this the company can do.

Overall, they have done a great job. On certain segments of certain tapes that they converted, the scenes appear overexposed. However, on other scenes on the same tape there is normal exposure. But with the version that I captured previously, none of the scenes are overexposed. The only format difference is that I converted to .dv and they convert to Pro Res.

I have attached one example, my personal capture originally from .dv (I just ran it through ffmpeg to copy to .avi), the company's capture before Premiere Pro and Avisynth, and the company's capture after these tools where I tried to lower the whites. As you can see, the forehead detail is visible in my personal capture while it is lost on the professional capture, even after trying to lower the exposure.

They claim that because ten years passed between my capture and their's, that the luminance could have degraded during that time, and that they have no ability to set a different white point on their capture system. My guess is that possibly because I was capturing in .dv 4:1:1, that automatically prevented the overexposure compared to their Pro Res 4:2:2.

Is there anything I can do about this or advise to them for their set-up to prevent this for future tapes I send to them?

Thank you.

I just noticed that my Timing settings revert to defaults constantly. I read that one can use the "Save current settings as default" command but that option is missing from my Capture menu.

After selecting/checking on my timing options, I would then typically begin the capature. However, yesterday I got distracted, didn't start capture, and when I went to check the Timings screen, I disovered my settings have changed. So, now I'm wondering of my capture is being done with my prefered Timing settings.

What I tried:
- Ater setting my settings, I exited Capture Mode and closed the app. And then re-opened it. But that didn't make it remember my settings.

As the name implies, I've noticed on my Panasonic Omnivision VCRs (the PV-9450, PV-9451, and PV-9662) whenever I play mono/linear audio tapes, I have this horrible sounding audio that sounds kinda scratchy (for a lack of a better term). Strange part is, Hi-Fi audio tapes are not affected by this. I also have other VCRs, like a JVC HR-DVS3U which seems to not have this particular problem.

EDIT:
I did try the following to no result:
Switched audio cables
Put them on a grounded power strips
Verified it wasn't the room that I'm in's light bulb causing the issue (its florescent)
Adjusted the linear audio heads on all
