A small Windows tool for moving DV video between a camcorder and disk over FireWire (IEEE 1394):

• Capture: pull DV from a camcorder and write type-1 or type-2 AVI files, with automatic scene splitting on timecode discontinuities and date/time-based filenames.
• Record: push AVI files back out to DV tape, optionally concatenating several files into one continuous recording.

WinDV 2 starts from the 1.2.3 source and modernizes it. It builds with Visual Studio 2026 as a Unicode C++20 application for both x86 and x64, and a number of long-standing bugs are fixed (see Changes from the original). File naming and registry settings are unchanged, so an existing WinDV configuration carries over.

The front end is a new WinUI 3 app (ui/, C#) over the same DirectShow engine. It has a Windows 11 look (Mica, Fluent controls, light and dark themes) and VCR-style transport controls: Rewind, Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-forward, plus a separate red REC button that writes AVI files while the tape runs.

The original MFC dialog was kept alongside it, unchanged, until the new app had been tested with a camcorder. That's now done, and the MFC app has been retired to legacy/app/ (kept for reference; not part of the build).

The samples use cloned versions of the original actors’ voices, using their original delivery as a reference. There’s also an American English voice option.

Instructions

To use it, give your preferred AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, etc.) the repo link below and the video you want to dub, and it should guide you through the process.

How it works

The agent breaks down the dialogue, figures out who is saying what, corrects the transcript, and translates each line to fit the original timing. It then generates the dub, checks the generated speech through transcription, and retries lines that fail those checks. It can also translate on-screen text and display it as captions.

The output keeps the original video without re-encoding, adds the dubbed audio alongside the original audio, and includes subtitles in both languages. Music and sound effects are separated from the dialogue and mixed back underneath the dub. It runs in half the time if you just want subtitles and no dub.

Requirements and runtime

The software is free and open source, and the speech models run locally on Windows with an AMD or NVIDIA GPU (6 GB VRAM minimum) or macOS. Your coding agent may have its own costs and processes transcripts and inspected frames wherever its model runs.

A full movie can take many hours. You still need to listen to the result and judge the voices and acting, but I’ve found it useful for watching things I otherwise couldn’t understand.

I wanted to share another project I've been working on called Disc Workshop. It's a Windows 11 app for turning readable video files into VCD, SVCD or XVCD BIN/CUE disc images for compatible CD-R players. The current version is 1.8.3 Beta.

You can plan a movie across multiple CDs, fit it onto one disc, or maximize the bitrate separately for each disc. It can suggest disc breaks using quiet-audio and black-screen detection, or you can preview the video and choose your own break times. The quiet-audio detection measures volume; it doesn't recognize dialogue.

Other features include burning selected subtitles into the picture, optional fades at internal disc breaks, configurable silent black at the start and end of each disc, and a low vision mode with larger bold text and high-contrast controls.

FFmpeg, FFprobe, FFplay, VCDImager and ImgBurn are separate prerequisites, with setup instructions on the website. Start with one assembled, readable movie file. Disc Workshop does not remove copy protection or author DVD/Blu-ray discs. HD and 4K input is downscaled to standard definition, and custom settings may reduce player compatibility.

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on called MovieSeeD. If you have some of the old Sirius MovieCD discs around, this might interest you.

MovieSeeD is a Windows player for the Motion Pixels video used on those discs. It also lets you convert the video to MP4 or AVI. The current version is 0.3.2 Beta, and the source code is available under GPLv2.

You do need to supply the supported original Sirius NT 5.02 codec. That codec and the movies are not included. The program runs the codec inside an emulator rather than installing the old driver into Windows.

You can find the download and instructions on my site, Station 823. The source code is on GitHub.

It’s still a beta, so I’d appreciate hearing how it works with your discs. If you run into trouble, please include your Windows version, the disc title, and what happened. Please don’t upload movie files or the original codec.

It scans folders and subfolders and combines image/video previews with sorting and filters for resolution, codec, file size, duration, frame rate and bitrate. It also has tags, ratings and batch renaming.

The workflow I use most is with my movie collection:

1. Scan the collection, including the separate subfolders, and sort by resolution.
2. Select any 4K films I would prefer to keep at 1080p and convert the selected group to 1080p.
3. Compare file size with running time to find unusually large movies, then convert suitable selections to H.265. I often use around CRF 25 as a starting point, check the output and adjust to taste before removing originals. Savings and quality depend on the source and settings.

I've tested it on a 6 TB shared drive containing thousands of videos and images.
