I just need a freeware program that will convert and avi file to a gif file. It can't convert the gif to a large file though. It has to be the most 1.65 MB. I have to upload it to a different forum and I don't know any imagehost that uploads gif's and bigger than that. Ok. So if you have any knowledge of a useful avi to gif freeware program please share it here. THANKS again.

AVIs are video and GIFs are photo or still type picture files. I assume you are asking about animated GIFS, such as used in my avatar? If so, they are a series of still pictures that are displayed similar to a cartoon.

Do a Google search for 'freeware animated gif creation' and you should get a few leads.

SUPER can convert AVIs to animated GIFs... but I'm not sure how flexible the options are for that particular conversion; I've never tried it.

Sorry for that. Yes I do mean ANIMATED gifs. I am going to try super but I just need the conversion software. Super is a WHOLE bunch of different things combined into one and I dont want to destroy my computer with so many programs. So I am going to see what Super is like and how large it is. Til' then more advice is DEFINITELY welcomed.

Super would probably just use mplayer with -vo gif89a, so if you wanted to avoid downloading/installing stuff you could just do it manually. Basically no options at all, no optimising colour pallets, etc. Still it will convert just about anything.

So, it's an mencoder option, then? I knew it had to be available in either ffmpeg or mencoder, but didn't have the time to check earlier today.

  7. Ulead Cool 3D can convert AVI to animated gif. There's a free trial.
It's not exactly obvious how to use it to do this, so if you end up trying that one, let me know and I'll tell you how to do it.

I used super and it worked fine except for the fact that it would output my animations into a dotty format. It looked like an old movie because of the quality. Im gonna try that program now. So I need help quid whatever its hard to spell.

Quality is ok here (gif is 256 colours only though).

mplayer gives about 900k for 1000 frames.

mplayer -vo gif89a -vf scale=80:80 -ao null -ac null -benchmark input.avi -frames 999

Yeah, I tried creating an animated GIF with SUPER, once (a while back), and it turned out okay. What kind of quality are you hoping for?

^I just want it to be clear. I don't care if its super clear and stuff.
Super gave me a whole bunch of dots. It looked awful.

If you have Photoshop, chances are you already have Image Ready. It'll open AVI and save as animated .GIF

Find the Attribute Panel. If it's not showing, you can enable it by clicking on one of the buttons on the right hand tool bar.
Click the drop down box and select Background.
In Background Mode box that appears, select Video.
A box will appear which allows you to select an AVI clip.

Once you've selected it, it should appear in the preview window.

At the bottom of the timeline, is a box where it tells you the number of frames. It seems to be set as a default to 10, which probably won't be enough. You'll know if it's not enough because if you save anything as a GIF, and it's not got enough frames, it will stop way too early.
Drag the cursor over the "10", and by trial and error, adjust the number of frames until the clip will play all the way through. Once you've got it so it plays right through, you can experiment to make sure you haven't got more frames than you need, by removing a few at a time, until the video stops too soon, and then add the last few back in.

When you've got it how you want it, File, Create Animation File, Animated Gif File...

The software may seem like it's not responding (and may even be reported as such if you look in Task Manager) but if you look at the bottom of the screen, there will be a progress bar to tell you it is doing something.

Here's a Gif that was made using this software.
