Hi guys,
could someone please explain to me what MPEG is? Is it audio or video codec? I have heard of Mp3 or MPEG3 and thats an audio codec so are MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4 audio codecs too? This is all really confusing. Are DVD's in MPEG format?

Most confusing: It's an audio codec. Its a video codec. It's a container format (like AVI).

MPEG-1 audio has different forms called "layers"(the number is the layer):
MP1 is the oldest and isn't used anymore.
MP2 is used for VCD,SVCD and DVD.
MP3 is used for audio and video(Divx/Xvid).
MPEG-1 video is used for VCD.(AKA m1v)
MPEG-2 video is used for SVCD and DVD. (AKA m2v)
MPEG-3 video was never developed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-3
MPEG-4 video is a container and can be AVI,WMV,QT,MOV,etc.
AVICodec can tell you what the video and audio properties are. -
MPEG is not a codec. MPEG is a group that approves formats.
MPEG-1 is a format. Used mostly for web formats, early streaming video, and then video CDs.
MPEG-2 is a format. Used mostly for DVD and some extended CD video formats like SVCD or CVD. It's an extension of MPEG-1.
MPEG-4 is kinda, sorta a format, more open, with XVID and DIVX and QT and WMV and others using it inside wrappers.
MPEG audio has layers.
Layer 1 has never been used that I know of, it may not even exist. In fact, Layer 1 may refer to the video portion of the stream.
Layer 2 (MP2) is an MPEG audio often used together with video.
Layer 3 (MP3) is mostly an audio file, though more modern MPEG-4 formats use them because of their higher compression and better quality than MP2 at the same compression level.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

There is no such thing as "MPEG-1 audio" or "MPEG-2 audio"
It's simply "MPEG Layer II" (mp2) or "MPEG Layer III" (mp3)
They can be multiplexed with either MPEG video format (MPEG-1 and MPEG-2)
I know, I know, it's complex and doesn't make a lot of sense, just pretend it's high school and memorize what you can.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

So does MPEG2 audio.
MPEG1 audio has a limited set of allowable bitrates and sample rates.
MPEG2 audio increased that set considerably (mainly on the low end-- <64kbps, <32kHz).
Otherwise they are identical, so you may often be treating them the same. However, it's good to know the difference, especially if you have a tool that accepts MPEG1, but not MPEG2.
They are cross-compabitle though, so you can make an MPEG1 audio file and have it play in a MPEG2 audio player, as well as making an MPEG2 audio file (but constrained within MPEG1 specs) and have it play in MPEG1 audio player.
There is also MPEG 2.5 audio (backwards-compatible Multichannel like in SVCD/DVD, and Non-backwards compatible MCh aka AAC).

It's one of those things I don't have to concentrate on very often. Plus you can seemingly interchange the audio at will. Mux a MP2 from a MPEG-2 file with the video instead from a MPEG-1 file. So they're interchangeable.
Like I said, it's sort of complex. I probably don't understand it myself 100%.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

MPeg2 is also the basis for most compressed tv broadcast today. This includes "digital cable", satellite up/down links, most dbs (MPeg4 is beginning), ATSC DTV (MPeg2 now, MPeg4 alternative in future). Also compressed tape formats HDV and IMX.

Fisrtly, sorry for replying after quite some - I was out of town. Hope this topic hasn't turned stale! My question is, if i rename i VOB file to M2V or I rename a DAT file to M1V, would it work?

VOB is nearly the same as MPEG2 PS, but NOT exactly the same.
DAT is nearly the same as MPEG1 SS, but NOT exactly the same.
There are a number of good (and cheap) apps that will extract the MPEG2 PS from VOBs, and MPEG1 SS from DATs, and there is a very good reason for using them. Compatibility is much more assured that way.
