i'm trying to open a mkv file on virtualdubmod so that i can transcode it into divx file.
however i keep getting the error below:

the file is supposed to be a h264 encoding type file.
so i've already installed ffdshow, enable the h264 decoding in the settings, installed a mkvsplitter filter, and tried the file with mkvextract and virtualdubmod. none of it worked.

i can play the file just fine in my desktop but it lags my old laptop. Both comps have the same codecs installed in them. so i wanted to transcode the file into divx to be played in my laptop.

any idea on how i can solve the "yyyy" codec and VFW error in virtualdubmod?
    thanz.

I have no experience with mkv files but I did have a problem opening H264 files until I set the ffdshow option in Virtualdub. I had already set the H264 option in ffdshow but untill I set it in Virtualdub, Vdub wouldn't open the file.

VirtualDubMod's mkv support is out of date (there is a warning). It can't handle native AVC, which is what your file contains. Also looks like it is VFR, which it can't handle either.

mkvextract should work fine. Since it is native AVC though, you will get raw h.264 video and since it is VFR the video will be a different length to the audio.

i tried alltoavi as suggested by Baldrick. Managed to get the the avi file but no audio. i recorded the audio separately but it turns out like what celtic_druid said, the video and audio is completely out of sync due to the variable frame rate.......... i guess i'll just give up on watching this at my laptop........
    thanz anyway guys

Well if all you want to do is reduce the resources required for playback, then you can resize down and re-encode the video and remux back to mkv with the original time codes. Everything will still be in sync that way.
