Is there any chance we can start a DVD movie size list? Mods, could we make it a sticky? I assume a lot of forum members here do some movie backups, so it would be nice to have a list showing what movies will fit on a standard DVD-R without any stripping or re-encoding. The guys at cdrom-guide.com have one, but I really like this forum better and would prefer to rely on the wisdom and experience of the other members here, rather than over there.

Thats a very good idea. i was thinking of the same thing a few weeks ago when i got my pioneer 104. i wanted to backup a dvd straight away. but i did'nt know if any of the new releases were single layer or not. are most "rental copy" dvd's single layer because they contain just the film? i think we should put together a list. we could make posts listing the dvd's and put them into categories:
1.only single layer
2. dvd9's whith a short film. just delete some of the extras
3. dvd9's with a long film which you might as well just re encode.
this would save a lot of hassle, and we would know where we stand straight away!

These DVDs can fit onto a DVD-R straight from Smartripper. NO IfoEdit. They have all the Bonus material and everything and fit on a DVD-R:

Mothman Prophecies
Dumb and Dumber
The Rock

Thats all I have so far. I think Scary Movie should fit or Next Friday. I have them they are very short (scary movie is like 88 min) but I havent ripped them yet to find out.

That's the spirit. These are the ones I am 100% sure of (since I did them this week). I would also say we list any where the movie portion can be backed up by ripping just the main movie VOBs and using IFOEdit to create new IFOs and BUPs.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - NTSC, Region 1, Full Backup

The Fifth Element - NTSC, Region 1, Full Backup

Snatch, NTSC, Region 1, Movie Only (just rip the 1st VOBs- it's 16X9)
