I keep asking this question, and I keep getting difference answers.
The local (new) apple store said as long as my Windows version of Quick Time (V.5) any MAC with V.5 can - My Windows' Quick Time can't
In the newsqroups someone said that the OS before OS "X" can, but, OS "X" need MACVCD.
The CompUSA guy said that since Apple came up with MPEG a MAC can play anything.
So, who right?
And what do I tell Mac users who want to play my VCD, but, don't want to buy it with out knowing if their MAC's would play it.

The BIG vcd Secret
Ok, I will try to make you understand this. This seams to be the most confusing fact in the mac vcd scene.
Fact 1. QuickTime player among with many other video players for mac do play VCD compilant mpeg files. That means for an example mpeg files encoded in TEMPGenc with the VCD (PAL/NTSC) tamplate.
Fact 2. Mac OS X can NOT mount MODE2 discs. Example of MODE2 discs are VCD, CD-i and SVCD
It is however able to read MODE2 filetrees. So it will look like its being mounted. But you can copy files or read them with other apps.
Fact 3. QuickTime for Mac OS 9 can read from MODE2 discs. Finder can not. This means that you can mount and read (watch with QuickTime Player) VCDs.
! This does not work under classic mode in OS X.
So can macs can play VCDs? Yes and No!
Warning!
MACVCD can play VCDs in osX. What it does is making Mac formated CDs with the video on it. This is NOT a VCD and will not be read by a standalone VCD/DVD player or a PC.
I hope this made some things clear.

Just because I use Windows don't think I am dumb - I use a PC because its cheaper then buying/running a Mac!

I did not think you are a dumbass. I use pc too (w2000) but mac mostly mac.

That's exactly the information I was looking for. I was flummoxed because I was running OS X and couldn't play VCDs. It was killing me because I searched all over the Apple Quicktime site, etc., couldn't find jack.
Thanks for your excellent and very concise advice, you really made it clear what I have to do: wait until OS X comes out with a release that reads the VCD data, or reboot and play it under OS 9.
Even if the other person who you so kindly supplied the advice didn't appreciate your expert helpfulness, I did, greatly!
