I am not worried about it as a vcd player. I have the S-video out and optical audio out hooked up to it. What are your thoughts on the PS2 DVD player? I know it isn't going to be as good as a high-end DVD player, but what do you think of it?

As goos as standalone DVD player. If you want both DVD and Game system go for PS2.

FYI, I have modded PS2(without soldering experience I did my self). It plays Backup Games means copied games.( world says pirated games)

I would give it 9/10 stars. It has menu's, subtitles, angels, some ps2's have a region bug that let's u change regions.

The only problem is PS2 has a highly descrimating laser. My DVD's skip more on the PS2 than on my APEX.

PS2 also supports both Y/PR/PB color stream and RGB Colorstream. I have mine linked into my Componate video jacks.

PS2 does not play VCD and SVCD but It does play CD-R's of the Blue and Green layer

actually these dummies dont know what they are talking about like most losers on this forum.......the ps2 is a horrible dvd player.....yes it is ok if u want a game system and dvd in one,,,,,but just dont expect much....the ps2 wont play many may dvd's..older and new....even sony admits this...it also displays many many movies in the wrong aspect ratio...even tho u change the aspect in the options in the ps2....but considering dvd playback comes with the ps2 its not a bad deal.....free is always good....

Well let me add my 2 cents to that question.

My friend hates it as a dvd player. Says it freezes between scene points and some features aren't accessable as they are on a dvd player.

I have had only really 2 problems with the ps2 as a dvd player. My friend was right, some dvd have lil pauses at scene points. I noticed this on Tekken:The Motion Picture. Also the ps2 skipped the whole intro of Tokyo Raiders. So I wouldn't rely on this as your dvd player but make you own decision
