DVD to VCD : how much HDD space required approx.

I am trying to convert a DVD to a VCD (thru smartripper, DVD2AVI and then TMPGEnc). I am trying the movie "The Patriot". How much free space on my Hard Disk should I need for the successful conversion ?

Also, after I have

STEP 1) ripped the movie to my hard disk(using smartripper)

STEP 2) and made a d2v and wave file (using dvd2avi), my

STEP 3) next step is to use TMPGEnc to encode it.

But for the 3rd step, do I need the vob files from step1 or just the d2v and wave files from step 2 only. If so, should it be safe to delete vob files after I have obtained the d2v and wave files.

Hi,

I don't know if you can delete the vobs files (probably not) but the conversion to VCD takes about 100mb for 10min, so 180min will take about 1.8gb.

To encode a movie from start to end you will need anywhere from 6gigs to 10 gigs. you need to have enough spce to rip the vobs and put them on your harddrive which could range from 4 to 7 gigs. The patriot is a long movie so i would expect around 7 gigs. then you need to run dvd2avi which will take at least 1 more gig for the wav file. then you will encode the d2v and the wav and that file will be at least 1.5 to 2 gigs. So all in all you need between 7 to 10. this is from start to finish.

OH!!! YES you need the vobs on your harddrive till the movie is completely encoded.I would leave them on your harddrive till you are finished buring. You want to make sure everything turns out before deleting them or you will have to start everything over again. The vobs are being used through tmpgenc through the d2v file.

I don't need the VOB's after I have the complete AVI.

I use SmartRipper to get the VOB's (for 2h10' it's about 5.5Gb of Vob's). Then I used FlaskMPeG and the codec MJPEG to extract the movie (including the correct audio and subtitles) into an AVI (1 large avi : took about 9.5Gb). This AVI is complete, sound is synchrone and quality is very high. Then I didn't need the VOB's anymore.

I used a bitcalculator to calculate how much time of the AVI i could use (this movie would take up 3 SVCD's) and splitted the AVI into 3 pieces using VDub.

Also using VDub, I extracted the WAVe files and precompressed them into MP2 (cause TMPGenc can have troubles with large AVI's and the audio).

Last step : encoding into MPeG2 for SVCD using TMPGenc (audio muxed on the fly, using the precompressed MP2-files).

Result : very good, but all (from beginning to end) took me 4days (about 6hours per part of the avi to compress it into a high quality SVCD Mpeg).

The movie I did this all was "Cowboy's" with John Wane (not warez : I own the DVD).

You could also make the d2v file to a avi file and use VirtualDub to make a very large avi file by using full processing mode. But that would require just as much space as the .vobs, you might as well just keep the .vobs. You can still play an avi file without the vobs but all you'll get is black video and the audio.
