some recent software programs that I installed anydvd(now uninstalled) nero 9(now uninstalled), dvdfab6
It will burn ok but the disc it burns is seen as a cdrom and when I click on it to open it it says to insert a disc.
If I put it in my other dvd drive it reads flawlessly
I had another extrenal burner which did the same thing so I bought this one hoping that it wouldn't have the same problem

Try uninstalling the DVD_ROM drive from device manager located in the control panel and restart the computer, it should automatically see the drive and reinstall it.

What OS are you using, XP or Vista? start ->Run->sfc /scannow. Do you have Roxio installed? If you reinstall Nero does it correct the problem? Its very possible that when you uninstalled Nero it removed some form of file association. Having Roxio and Nero is known to cause a few conflicts such as dvds being recognised as cds and such.

use nero cleaner to make sure you've removed all the files or use regedit to remove files if you know how to use that.

would be helpful if you posted the model of your dvd burner. also post your computer specs as well in your profile.

newer dvd burners need to use a 80 wire ide cable or the drive won't work correctly.
