MKV to IPOD conversion error

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue I've been having trying to convert my MKV files into Ipod (MP4 container) format.

I am able to convert AVI files to IPOD just fine using a little app called GP3 Converter and also OJOsoft Total Video Converter works as well.

I am trying to use either of these to convert MKV files into the IPOD format but have been unsuccessful. GP3 Converter flags an error message and cancels the conversion. OJOsoft Total Video Converter works for exactly 3 seconds, creates a 36 byte file and then says it's finished.

I have the CCCP installed so my codecs *SHOULD* be installed correctly. (I am able to play the MKV files on WMP)

On further investigation, Video is h.264 (avc1) audio seems to be mp4a

Do these so called 1 button easy converting programs even work? The AVI to Ipod MP4 conversion works easily but why does it struggle with the mkv files?

MKV is just the name of the container. It can hold any of several video and audio formats along with multiple audio streams and subtitles. But they are probably using the H.264 codec for the video. A program like MediaInfo can tell you what video and audio codecs are used.

You might try XviD4PSP. It seems to be able to accept MKV files and output to a IPod compatible format.

Does not work with that program, i get an error: Cannot play back file

Also I have been sucessfully using AVI-Mux to remove the japanese audio track and all of the sub tracks from the files without any issues.

I don't understand how AVI-Mux can find the information and work with it just fine yet these others don't seem to be able to.

Try IpodME or Handbrake.

It seems that the audio conversion is causing the problem, any suggestions?

If i use AVI-Mux to remove the audio track the programs convert the video portion of the file just fine

One method is to go back to Xvid4psp, open the Audio Editing Options and select the source as Stereo.

Xvid4psp wont open the files - it errors whenever it try to open one of my mkv files

anyways, I was actually able to get it figured out

1. AVI Mux to separate out the audio track which is 6 channel to a .mka file

2. used a tiny little program called "Audio/Video to Wav Converter" to convert the .mka to a .wav file

3. MediaMonkey (any .wav to .mp3 converter should work) to convert the .wav to a 192 Constant Bit Rate .mp3 file

4. AVI Mux zipped only the new audio from the mp3 and the video from the .mkv file into one new.mkv file

5. OJOsoft Total Video Converter to convert the new 2 channel mkv file to IPOD mp4

did 1 try on 1 of 26 files, for this one the sync was excellent, video quality and sound quality are also good

does anyone know of a way to convert 6 channel audio down to 2 channel all in one step/without removing it from the mkv container?

that would save me alot of time
