Anyone have a clue why HDV recorded in the Z7 does not play back on the HD 700 walkman or on the HD1000 camcorder? Also the files captured from this camera render much slower then other HDV files from my other sony or the canon hv30. The file specs are the same. Is there a hidden compatibility issue I am missing? I thought sony HDV was the same in all cameras.

Nope. It should be standard HDV or DV/DVCAM. Are you in standard 1440x1080i mode?
Are you playing the tape or passing through a computer first? How are you transferring?
I use the HVR-Z1U and have had no problems.
The z7U has special 24p/30p modes that may not be backwards compatible. This should be spelled out in the manual.

Ed, yes, HD, 24p, 1440. I even tried to copy the tape via fire wire and both the HD1000 and the HDV walkman gave a tape format error?? I can only capture/playback with that camera. Basically it negates the reason for having the walkman if it wont play tapes from the Z7.

Does it work in 1080i mode?
I'd call Sony and get answers.
24PA from cameras like the DVX-100A will play jerky due to the 3:2:2:3 sequence but they will play. 24PA is intended for 24P computer editing in programs like Vegas or Premiere. It could be normal 3:2:3:2 telecine.
This Sony description seems to be describing 24PA but they aren't clear about the field sequence. 24PA should play on 30i(60i) equipment but Sony may have added a flag. Ask them.

After reading that, it appears the VU1 and Z7U "24p Scan A" is 3:2:3:2 so it should play like a continuous movie.

only HDV 1080i is playable in all HDV 1080 cams/decks.

if you want to use the tapes in the walkman and other cams it will need to be recorded in "normal" 1080i.

According to the links above, 24p "Scan A" resets the 3:2 cadence and GOP structure at each camcorder pause so that sequential playback maintains cadence no matter how the clips are arranged. It should play like any telecine video. Inverse telecine would put the A frame on the second frame of any clip.
