I gave up on this player without buying it and bought the Momitsu instead some months ago. At the time all the reports were something like "The Oppo will never, never, never, never be able to play DVDs from any region but region 1 and never play Blu Ray discs from any region but A", so I bought the Momitsu. Maybe had the people who worked out the firmware hack done their work a little sooner, I might have bought the Oppo instead, but I'm pleased with the Momitsu.

Yeah, as jman98 mentioned, the Oppo has a region-free firmware now. Momitsu has just released the much less expensive BDP-799 which seems to have almost all the features of the original BDP-899:

I realize your post, edDV, was about the Oppo, and there are some reviews about it out there, but you might want to know about other options besides just the PS3, particularly if you want to play Blu-Ray discs from outside the US. Here's a review of the original Momitsu model and most of what he says should apply to the just-released BDP-799:

You know, to tell you the truth, I don't see much image quality differences between blu-ray players. I have a PS3 I use for right now, but once I find another job I may buy a seperate player. Or maybe a blu-ray changer like the Sony 400 disc, once the price comes down to a reasonable level.

I bought one but I haven't received it yet. I studied and compared different models. What made me decide on Oppo was this unit has the best conversion and audio. The real difference is if someone watches a lot of DVD and need good upscaling. Also it has 7.1 analogue output just in case if the main audio set does not have true HD and the DTS decoding or the latest hdmi. My son has a PS3 I tried it but didn't connect the audio to amplifier just TV but the PS3 itself is loud like a projector, Blu Ray quality is more or less the same for most players. I have the Oppo dvd too the only complain is the drive takes a long time to open. I hope this Blu Ray would not be the same. Another important thing is , it plays most everything through it's USB. Lack of Netflix and pandora is not important who wants a low quality video and audio? for kids use the computer. It also doesn't have wifi, don't want to go through detail but connection to secure wifi has its problems it is easier to use a bridge. Considering it's good support and things I mentioned justified paying $200 more. I'm one of those that is not rich enough to buy cheap things. Most Blu Ray players look cheaply made and flimsy.

I bought this several months ago right after it came out. I believe it's worth every penny of the price. The audio output justifies the price on its own. When I first got it it wouldn't play bluray on dvd discs that I made but they did a firmware upgrade and now those are PERFECT. I make my own blu ray discs on dvd from my camcorder.
As for the upscaling, I'm not all that impressed. However, this may be because my standard DVD player is also an OPPO. I rarely get excited about companies anymore; but OPPO seems to have gotten everything right.

With the BDP-83 off/in standby you can press 'Open' and the tray will be open in about four seconds or so.

Or you could buy a re-badged Oppo with "Audiophile" tweaks (usually means a different power supply) for about $5000
