I would like to record on my PC all my old VHS Tapes. I want to make sure I buy a DVD player that will play DVD +/- DL's. I get the best quality on Dual layer discs. I currently have a Toshiba DVD/VHS combo and that does not play Dual Layer discs.

Although there's no quarantee that a player will support DL set your writer to the DVD-ROM booktype.

DVD-ROM booktype mimics a pressed DVD so it is more compatible.
Most writers allow you to set +R media to DVD-ROM booktype by using a utility or use ImgBurn(Tools->Drive->Advanced Settings).
BTW:always use Verbatim +R DL for best results.

Nero has several DVD-ROM Book Types (ISO, UDF) which one or it also has DVD-Video. I am using Pinnacle Studio to burn VHS onto DVD, but it does not specify Book Type in the Make Disc section just DVD.
I am looking ay possible a Panasonic DVD-S54 DVD Player. It shows that it will play DVD +/- R DL's It seems they all want the discs to be finalized on a camcorder or DVD Recorder though in order to play them, nothing said about a PC DVD Burner..

Well that worked I had to save the captured video as an .iso in Pinnacle and the I burned with imgburn. I have to use a samsung burner I have though. The Sony burner is not in the list for changing the book type. I was able to play back on the Toshiba player that I have now. Thanks for all the great info

As MOVIEGEEK says, Verbatim makes the only reliable DL media with their DVD+R DL discs. I strongly discourage the use of DVD-R DL media for a variety of reasons, but if you must use it, use Verbatim and burn only with ImgBurn. In fact, burn the DVD+R DL only with ImgBurn too.
Setting the book type is rarely necessary with newer DVD players. That was necessary some years ago but not so much now. And note that you can't set book type on -R media. Setting the book type is only for +R media.
