I have a wdtv that plays my blu-ray and dvd files, a ps3 that plays my blu-ray and dvd discs. When I have problems with a file, that's when I go to the physical disc to play. Yet, both machines have annoying limitations. The WDTV won't dvd movies with menus, subtitle issues, etc. PS3 is no good with playing uncompressed files unless you stream.

I figure an HTPC will do everything I need it to do in terms of DVDs. It will dvd movie files with menus, it will play the physical disc, it won't have any subtitle issues. Basically, in terms of DVDs, it is all covered. However, the more I read, I realize Blu Ray on a computer isn't that advance. Is that true? Even if you were to pop in a physical blu ray disc, is it true that software may have problems playing it?

I was thinking of selling my ps3 to add funds towards a htpc. However I fear I still need a dedicated stand alone blu ray disc player.

Please advise.

No need to sell your PS3 if you still game with it.

An HTPC with a BluRay player should operate fine as long as you build it on hardware that supports BluRay playback. Make sure your video card supports HDCP and your system can handle compressed HD video content. Almost any new system should work for this.
